You know, it's funny - when I saw this picture, I thought the water dispenser was an asthma inhaler   I figured it was a reference to the fact that canaries were often used as bellwethers to determine if toxic gases were present in mines.  If the canary died, it was proof there wasn't enough oxygen for miners to proceed (since its smaller body meant it took less time for the toxins to poison it).  So I figured this canary was a survivor, and was dreading his next trip into the mines, which was why he was depressed.

Obviously, I WAY overthought things...
