Ah well. Many places as we grow older we will only visit in our memories or in others' pictures.

Thank you so very much, dear Betty. Long time ago, when I was still traveling the world. Now I am here on my last evening in Boulogne-sur-mer, which is so much closer to my home as Nevada ....

So, now you are at home I suppose. Me - again at work (night shift). We are having big storm just at the moment and I am happy, because the hot of last days was already unbearable!

Yes, indeed. I have returned yesterday, but was even too tired to look at my pictures. Take care, Betty, and see you soon ...

You, too! Do you have another night-shift ahead, or rest?

Today was my free day and tomorrow as well. Then 2x morning shift (8hours), once whole day (12hours) and once night. This scheme repeats 4x before my big block of free days and it goes like this every month. I think itΒ΄s a great system with a lot of free days.

Kodachrome - as I have mentioned to Richard elsewhere I shed a tear when I heard that it isn't made any more

I read that somewhere as well. There were a lot of tears shed. But I don't think tones are just determined by film are they? I'm using the cheapest there is at the moment, Superia 200 and I find it can be manipulated a lot by adjusting exposure.

Tones, yes, important for sure. But it was also about superb gradation and grain. Ektachrome was even better in terms of gradation ...

Ah yes, of course. Though I find that scanning loses all of this. Film photography should only be seen on prints imo.

High quality slide shows, actually - prints are so difficult - they have no light ...

Very true. This German suburbian housing system really prevents light from entering the house too. My grandfather, unlike many of his day, was a very good colour photographer and shot exclusively on slides. I should really dig his work out of the attic.

I'll see what can be done. I think a lot of the photos I've seen have been far too delicate to handle. But in the coming weeks I'll scan my favourites in. You may want to have a look at this for a stunning view of life in colour in the early 1900s.

This is just awesome. I even see the port of Duisburg with hundreds of chimneys and steam barges

The photos are just stunning. There's an idea that the 20th century should only be represented in black and white, but these are better than anything I've seen before. And, strange though it may seem, but Duisburg was a big place once upon a time.
