Geometrically perfect. Great contrast between the ocean and sky's green-and-blue versus the red-and-white of the boat.

I scrolled way down, we certainly had an interesting conversation when you first posted this!

It's still a wonderful shot. Those perfect layers of color, and the boat in just the right place.

EintoeRn In reply to thorshammerthor [2011-07-17 21:43:43 +0000 UTC]

mmmh - do you really think so? I thought it was rather too conventional

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thorshammerthor In reply to EintoeRn [2011-07-18 11:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Your placement of the sailboat so low in the composition is one aspect that is unconventional. Most (IMO) would have placed the boat higher up in the photo.

Your use of negative space is what really stands out here. The entire middle of the photograph is basically subject and contrast free. That, to me, is not done very often. And even more rare, is to do this and make it work.

Both items contribute to give this photo a scale of the vastness of the earth (both sea & sky) to the sailboat. It works here in a simple and pleasing manner. It is the layers of colors that keeps my interest in this photo of an unconventional composition.

I hope this makes sense.

EintoeRn In reply to thorshammerthor [2011-07-19 19:20:12 +0000 UTC]

Kind thanks for these observations and very thorough analyses. I guess it came as close as it can get to what I had in the back of my mind.
For there is one additional point here which makes the picture interesting for me. It is the fact that calmness and vastness of sea and earth (as you say) oppose very strong colors and color contrasts (between the boat and the sea).
Thanks again.
