Description
Life goes deeper than what you can see.You have to look at the full version to see the detail. Thanks for looking.
Edit: 2-26-05 1:22pm
Imagine my surprise when I logged on DeviantART this morning to find loads of comments and favorites clogging my DA messages page. I was totally perplexed, until I thought to myself, "No way, I didn't get a daily deviation, did I?" I found that all the favorites were pointing to my picture "The Life of a Leaf" and when I went to take a look, my jaw dropped.
This image was one of about nine total frames. I experimented with different aperture sizes and angles. I chose this one because I liked the short depth of field. Some of the other images with a wider aperture seemed to be almost too busy and didn't really lead the eye anywhere. With a shorter depth of field, it really helps to isolate the leaf and emphasize the texture and detail.
The leaf was given to me by a friend who had found it some years ago and kept it sealed in a plastic bag. It had a natural curve to it, which I thought was kind of neat, and helped add some interest to the picture. The lighting was all natural. It was kind of a sunny day with the sun off to the side a little. The sunlight was filtered by a small bush, which cast some interesting shadows across the picture.
I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has commented and/or faved it. I really do appreciate every single comment and fav a ton.

seriously amazing. The idea is classic. The composition really pulls it together. The shadow adds a lot of extra interest to the left area which would have been boring without it. The veins of the leaf really have great focus and they tell a story. It is almost as if this leaf doesn't want to be forgotten forever.

that's a great idea and photograph... you did well to convey that much detail in such a natural setting.
I used a sceletal leaf like this as the basis for these two prints :

Amazing! The leaf looks transparent, with beautiful lace-like holes through it. Is it really like that or is it just a trick of the eye?

No trix here. It's just a bare skeleton with just the veins left. All the flesh of the leaf decayed. I don't know how it happened, but it did.

very nice leaf you have there .
i just wish the depth of field was a little larger, especially since there was enough light for a 1/500th of a second exposure at f/5.6. nice border, and nice colors. great image!

These images, these details of little things are the ones that get me thinking about life... I would be writing a big load of thoughts but right now I'm observing, gathering, more than building up a logical line of thoughts about it...
The leaf is beautiful now as Im sure it was in its lushing days... as we are...
Great capture... congrats... its a fav for me, one more in the bunch!

There's something about this picture that... I dunno. Reminds me of graduation day from high school. A mix of poignant thoughts and happy ones. (I'm sentimental... heheheh...) Again, wonderful work. Must

I love the shadows of the lacy veins that remain after the leaf's substance has been chewed away. This has a neat composition. I favorited it too, it's something thought provoking!

the shadows and the dof are really awesome

I see what you mean. It is a little hard to tell from the small version. That's why I reccomend the full view so you can see all the detail.

Excellent shot! Understanding a little background of it now from your edit is great. I agree with all you mentioned in your edit, shallow dof, a very difined focus area is just right. the lighting is great creating that delicate shadow.. very cool!
