Description
Mechanical Parrot, referenced from photographs taken from The Field Museum of Chicago (my favorite place, ever). Did this one on a new kind of paper: Durer Etching Paper, quite luscious, and highly reccommended. Watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic, egg tempera, marker, and organic compounds on paper. 22x30".Related content

Again, I wish the lines were cleaner, colors darker and sharper. Wonderful, regardless... I just think the detail and hard work could be showed off better with different materials, perhaps... like that one bird you made with charcoal and then acryliced over.

This was a somewhat blurry image, unfortunately. I'm pretty happy with the definition of the work. I suppose one might have to see it in person. I did indeed leave a few parts unfinished/unrefined intentionally. Thanks for the comments though, it's always good to get a new perspective!

really interesting. there's so much going on here i don't know what to look at first. so many colors, media types, and figures. i like all the chaos actually. my favorite is the little tower in the top back though. i have a feeling that this looks really really good in person. the picture here isn't the best quality though.

It does look better in person -- this photo is terrible. glad you like it, anyhow.

what is that liquid shooting cable thing, and the tailpipe looking thing at the top? it looks pretty cool tho, adds some wonder and mystery to it. you really have a great imaginator and attention to detail. you also have a great sense of color evident on this piece also. great job!

i adore the parrot!! hes beautiful!! this piece is again so evocative--strangley beautiful, an amalgamation of genres and ideas but woven to thoroughly and seemlessly together it is as if it is a window into another world where such things are reality. amazing!!

Well done, such unusual textures.
What did you do to create the bumpyness on the wing?

It's a labored process. I start with watercolors, to get the basic froms and then light modeling. I then do some slight cross hatching and outlines with ink. I do more modeling on top of that with marker, then I add some acrylic somewhat sporatically to give it a more organic feel. After that I go in with sumi ink and a small brush, doing a bolder outline on the shadow side of the bumps. I do some lighting on top of that with some hints of white gouache, and finally glaze a layer of egg temepra mixed with acrylic matte medium on top of that. Now that I have typed all this out, it seems rather ridiculous and quite excessive . . . but it's a hell of a lot of fun, too!!

Excessive? Not for arts sake it isn't, especially if it turns out this good. Ever thought of doing a reptile? I bet you could create some interesting skin textures for one.

I have one, somewhat unfinished, but I'll upload it anyhow. Not a lot of texture, but nice pose!

Now this has to be the craziest so far, but I still love it. Reminiscent of Hieronymous Bosch in it's twisted nature.
