DOWNLOAD FOR FULL VIEW AND BEST DETAILSEdit: I got second place for August! Yippee! Thanks very much to everyone who voted for me.
This is my grand project of the summer, my gift for #Artcrossing ! I took a little longer than I was supposed to (about 5 weeks) but as you can see, it was a big project! This is for Makay, otherwise known as =souffle-etc !
Makay's profile said that he liked "nerdy things" and listed Legend of Zelda as the first example. What stumped me for a day or two was that Makay said he would prefer artisan crafts or 3D art, seeing as he did not have any room for paintings and drawings! I was in a bit of a bind because drawings were what I had planned on doing. However, I realized that I could make a board game! I love thinking up rules for different games, and while it doesn't fit exactly what Makay asked for, I REALLY hope he likes it!
This game is called "Legend of Zelda: Hero of Time" because on the board I chronicled the development of the Legend of Zelda series by showing a chronological progression of character designs. In order, we have... Princess Zelda, from the original Legend of Zelda; Link, from The Adventures of Link; Sheik, Navi and Link from Ocarina of Time; the Four Giants and Moon from Majora's Mask; Zelda from Super Smash Bros Melee; Ganondorf and Tingle from Wind Waker; Midna and Wolf Link from Twilight Princess; and Zelda from Skyward Sword. "Hero of Time" is also one of Link's monikers.
This game was built from scratch. The basic object of the game is to collect the most Rupees by the end. Rupees are collected by landing on a spot associated with a certain color of Rupee; green gives you 1 Rupee, blue 5, yellow 10, red 20, and purple 50. Every third spot is a Treasure Chest (marked with a keyhole), and a player who lands on that draws from the pile of Triforce-shaped cards. As you can see in the example picture ("A Gerudo pickpocketed you! Lose 5 Rupees") these cards have effects that can affect your Rupee count as well as your position on the board. The events on these cards are usually based on events from the games or part of the common fan experience (eg, one card makes you skip a turn for getting stuck in Ocarina of Time's water temple and needing to consult the guidebook). There was also a card that appealed directly to Makay-- he said he didn't like Mario, so I threw in a reference to that in one of the cards.
Everyone has to go around the board at least twice before anyone can win. Makay has a rulebook that outlines all of that and more, but I'm not going to recount every single rule here! My friends and I test played the game a few times, though, so we hope the gameplay is good-- we found it to be so!
The START and FINISH spots are decorated with Hylian scripts. You start over by Sheik. In the center it says START in Twilight Princess Hylian. Then winding around are the following phrases... Legend of Zelda; Link; Ganondorf; Triforce. These are written in the Hylian depicted in Wind Waker. Same set up for where you end by Skyward Sword's Zelda. In the middle it says FINISH and along the edge we have... Ocarina of Time; Twilight Princess; Epona; Navi. Wind Waker Hylian is based on Japanese, so I had to use the Japanese renderings of the names (eg Toki no Okarina, Zeruda).
All this and I've never played a Zelda game! However, I've been a long-time fan thanks to Super Smash Bros Melee. Zelda has been my go-to character for years, although I've recently switched to Sheik...! Even though I've yet to play an actual Zelda game, I am a big fan of the universe. (And come on... SSBM and Brawl feature characters who aren't usually playable, and Sheik is in more Smash games than Zelda games!) I have learned so much about the series through researching this project. The Zelda Wiki [link] was instrumental in this project. I also have to thank my friends ~ponyprincess13 and *norree for their knowledge of the Zelda universe and for helping me test the game.
Materials: Whenever I could, I preferred to use markers, but sometimes the color just didn't fit so I had to go to colored pencils. In a few rare events I even turned to my 96-crayon pack! Even though the mostly-markers strategy gave me a limited color palette, I favored markers for their boldness. I inked with Micron pens and sometimes had to color with those for tricky bits like Midna's arms. Most of these images were adapted from official art. SSBM's Zelda, however, comes from a pose I got from pausing the game and drawing directly from the TV screen. Sheik is a combination of the Ocarina of Time design from the official art and SSBM Sheik's taunt pose. That one was tricky! Had a very low-res version of the pose to work with, but I did my best.
The photographs were taken in direct sunlight, but they still didn't turn out as good as I thought they would! I did my best to bring back their original vitality through Photoshop and Preview's photo editing software. In order to be shipped, the board had to be cut in half. (Straight through the Moon's teeth and the tip of OoT Link's hat.)

Wiki notwithstanding, I can't believe you made this without ever having played a Zelda game before That only adds to the amazingness of this creation; great job, and what a wonderful gift!!

Thanks! And thanks for reading the description enough to find that out, haha! I was surprised when I realized I had never played a Zelda game, because I've always loved the universe thanks to Super Smash Bros Melee and watching my friends play Zelda games.
Thanks so much for your comment! It makes me very happy.

No worries love, you're very welcome And I know where your coming from; SSBM was actually my first real encounter with Zelda too. Then my dad eventually got me Twilight Princess as a surprise, and I've fallen pretty hard for the series ever since
So it was nice to find someone else who loved the universe but wasn't necessarily a lifelong fan^^

Thanks! I'm glad you like it so much. Since I don't have the board anymore, you could suggest contact paper to =souffle-etc . I am not familiar with the material myself!
Thanks again.

Thanks! There was definitely a lot of work involved (which is why it took me 5 weeks to get it all ready to go even though you're encouraged to finish gifts earlier). But it was so fun!

Omg I have been waiting to see the final version so excitedly since you told me what you were making! This is epic! Must have taken AGES. I love the level of thought and detail you put into the whole thing. And also as a board gamer myself I respect that you got some people together to playtest rather than just making it and shipping it. Definitely all these little touches that count!!!

THANKS PONY PRINCESS THE THIRTEENTH!
I'm glad you like the presentation. It took me a little while to figure out how best to present it on dA, but I'm definitely happy with the result.
OF COURSE you like the green Rupees, you silly minion!
