-----------------------

The year is 1915. It's been years since the Great American War, in which the United States of America lost its place as a world power and was ultimately defeated by the coalition of Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Japan, and Great Britain. Shortly after the war ended, internal unrest in the United States reached a boiling point, and the country effectively collapsed. Included is an archive of various countries and cliques created in the wake of the War.

American Republic: Remnant of the official American government. Occupies most of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and western Virginia. Capital is Washington, D.C. As of 1912 the government, headed by general John J. Pershing, has suspended elections, citing serious threats against the sovereignty of the United States of America and foreign influence in American politics, as detailed on the leaflet put out by Pershing's administration. Its flag represents the "interim regime" dominated by the military, and is a field of 13 red and white horizontal parallel stripes - with red on top and bottom , with a large blue circle in the center. Within the circle is a large filled-in circle of 51 stars. The design was created by the Pershing administration to represent America's eternity and strength.

Federated States of America: Set up in 6 southern states - Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina - by the German government in the Treaty of Washington. Capital is New Orleans (alternatively known as Neue-Ulm). The country's official head is the President, however much of its power lies with the Federal Council, a council of 11 individuals appointed by the Chief of Staff, a position held by a German military officer. The officer occupying the office is also granted the rank Herzog von Amerika ("Duke of America"). As of 1915 the officer occupying that rank is August von Mackensen. The flag of the Federation is a series of 13 horizontal red and white stripes - the top and bottom stripes being white - with a large black rectangle in the canton. The rectangle is 8 stripes in height, and in length goes 4/9 of the way to the right end. The flag was designed by Wilhelm II and Erich Ludendorff as redesigned American flag with German colors.

Republia di Amerigo: The Republic of America, more commonly known by its Italian name, Republica di Amerigo, was set up by the Italian government in a fashion similar to Germany's Federated States of America. Italy benefited by gaining some of America's most populous centres under its control, and in it they set up the Republica di Amerigo. The Republica is headed by the Presidente, who is democratically elected. However, the President can only be selected from parties deemed acceptable by the Congress of New York, whose members are directly appointed by the King of Italy. Thus, candidates for President are usually just Italian generals. The flag of the Republica is a field of 5 red and white stripes - red on top and bottom - with a large blue rectangle stretching from top to bottom on the lefthand side. In the rectangle are three evenly-spaced stars arranged vertically.

Democratic People's Republic of New York: One of the first breakoff states after the Great American War, only after the Three Armies. Communist revolutionaries rose up in Buffalo, New York shortly after the war ended due to the destruction caused by the British invaders. After the war ended, the revolutionaries gained more members and declared a full-out revolution. They only managed to secure what remained of New York State before the American government sued for peace due to more pressing issues. Flag is a white field with two large rectangles, arranged vertically, on the right side. The top rectangle is orange, the bottom blue. To the left is the logo of the CPUSA, large and in red.

Three Armies: First faction to break away from the U.S. after the war. Consists of three armies initially commissioned by the U.S. government - the 7th, 8th, and 10th armies. These armies formed cliques during the war and mutinied against the American government. They unified under the nominal rule of Harold Benjamin Fiske, a general stationed in the region at the time. While not officially called "the Three Armies," it is a common name for the three cliques in the area. The flag is a blue field, penetrated by a horizontal red stripe running along the center. The red stripe is surrounded by thinner white stripes. Offset to the left, along the red and white stripes, is a large blue circle, outlined in white. Within the circle is a circle of 13 stripes, reminiscent of the original American flag.

Shin Sekai: Japanese colony in America. Directly controlled by the Chrysanthemum Throne (the Japanese Emperor), but especially due to Emperor Yoshihito's physical and mental state, is headed by the regional Prime Minister. Under Prime Minister Kyosuke Eto, Shin Sekai is undergoing a process of Japanization. Japanese is being taught as the offical language, and ethnic Japanese are encouraged to migrate to "Japan's new frontier." The flag is a white field decorated with crimson red waves near the bottom, and in the canton there is a circle of the same color. Inspired heavily on the Japanese flag and traditional Japanese design.

they're a theocratic Mormon state, the official name would be something along the lines of the "Holy State of Deseret" but they'd more commonly just be called "the Church of Mormon" or just "the Mormons."

I'm curious as to why Great Britain (as part of the anti-US side) gave up so much of Canada to the Japanese? Was this just a case of being a war on two fronts, with Japan and UK not really being allies, just both anti-America?

In this timeline the Oregon Territory wasn't really colonized up to the point the war began, and the Japanese used this to their advantage by marching through the unclaimed territory to get to the Pacific-Northwest. I have it on the original map of the war I made, which is in the description.

ah... yes, so it is. I had seen your earlier map, but the "unclaimed" bit didn't really register. Great maps and timeline BTW!
