No, I mean that it's doesn't look like you've just used the fill tool, but actually painted the black backround which gives some gray to it.

Oh jazz jackrabbit was a side scroller made by epic megagames back in 1993 I think. Quite excellent. The protagonist was a exceptionally fast moving green rabbit named Jazz who carried a gun larger than himself and was on a mission to save Eva Earlong and the planet Carrotus from the depredations of the evil Devan Shell.
