yes, i'm aware i seem to use that pose on everything, it's unintentional, i swearanyway! dark nebula! who was fairly easy to design but a bitch to colour since his official colour scheme literally has... two whole colours in it

so designing his colour scheme in such a way that it wasn't either too dark or too different from the original was surprisingly hard! i think i got it looking nice in the end, though. the coloured lineart really helped.
as for his design, it was actually pretty easy to do, since he's meant to be a little mirror-image (of sorts) to 02, hence why they're wearing basically the same outfit. there's a whole lot of headcanon behind why dark nebula looks like 02, but it all mostly sprang from his name in japan being "dark zero". he went around pretending to be 02, and put some decent effort into his appearance because of it.
the tendril-y bits were actually kind of hard to do with low effort, but i'm okay with how they look.

He looks FABULOUS! I've found that Nebula's pretty hard to fit into a headcanon, so good on you for figuring him out. I like his robes. Nice hair, too.

He is incredibly fabulous, in no small part due to him imitating 02 who is apparently well-established as quite the looker. My characters have long since escaped me. |D
For the longest time I just straight up ignored him and was able to successfully get on without a place for him in my headcanon. It wasn't until the Pupupu Encyclopaedia actually confirmed that he was Dark Matter that I bothered to make an outline for him. I can tell you what I have so far if you're interested in more text dump |D

Well, he's still fairly recent development-wise, but I'll give you what I've got. XD
Physical stuff: quite small compared to... pretty much all of the other high-ranking Dark Matter - for a given value, of course. They can all change size and shape pretty fluidly (except maybe Drawcia, all of my info on her is actually a friend's headcanon, so I can't say). So their default heights are as such: 02 is 6'5", Drawcia 6'3", Miracle Matter 5'11" and Dark Nebula 5'6". He's a small impetuous child. Has a very similar but not entirely identical build to 02; the primary differences are of course their heights and thus small differences in proportion, and his face. 02's face is longer and slightly more angled (and much more gaunt, thanks to the sunken cheeks and horrible eyebags), where Dark Nebula's is more healthy-looking.
Dark Nebula is basically a small mirror image of 02; his eye is on the opposite side to 02's, and his outfit, as you may have noticed, calls back to 02's in pretty much every respect. More on why later.
Nebula was created as a research experiment into the various qualities of independent Dark Matter. He was created independent from the get-go, where normally 02 sort of just... creates a Dark Matter and slowly builds it into an independent. Nebula grew and as he did began to exhibit his different abilities, his most prominent combat-oriented ones being a mastery of fire, ice and lightning, of course. This makes him thematically similar to Miracle Matter, in a way.
His personality is best described as "an ego that would put Miracle Matter's to shame", which is one hell of an ego indeed. This is actually sort of due to the way 02 treated him; he was an experiment, a learning activity, and since 02 can be quite callous with his Dark Matter to begin with (they're only facets of himself, after all, and he hates himself), Dark Nebula wasn't treated the best. Particularly, he was often compared to Miracle Matter and made to feel that he wasn't quite satisfactory, so to make himself feel better he just built himself an ego the size of the moon. Eventually he got fed up with 02 completely and ran off.
This was some time (years, who knows, my timeline needs work) before Squeak Squad. In the time until then, Dark Nebula changed his appearance to mimic 02's and started calling himself "Dark Zero", completely pretending to be 02. This actually worked out somewhat well for him, as the public for the most part bought it, and he was able to romp around as he pleased, with all the fear he could ever want to feed him. 02 just kind of went "god damn stupid kid" and ignored Nebula.
Somewhere along the line he ran across some actually-fairly-competent magi and they sealed him into the chest. Even they couldn't seal a Dark Matter fully, and it really only restrained him physically; he was still able to exude the air of negative feelings that all Dark Matter carry, and eventually started messing heavily with their heads. They got rid of him somewhere, and very little information about what was in the chest got out, aside from fevered babbling about some kind of "powerful demon". That evidently got garbled into the reputation for "ultimate power source" that the Squeaks heard about, and from there Squeak Squad kicked off. Good ol' Meta Knight wasn't fooled, and though he wouldn't have necessarily thought "there's a Dark Matter in that chest", he knew it was some kind of monster.
So Squeak Squad happens, and Nebula possesses Daroach. This lead to another of the things he was an experiment into: namely, an independent/sufficiently powerful Dark Matter who could possess things without horribly warping their appearances. You've seen what a Swordsman can do when possessing something (Dedede), so have fun imagining what would happen if something at Miracle Matter's level of power possessed someone. Nebula, however, exhibited a remarkable skill in possession, not just in control, but in barely altering his victim's appearance. Dark Daroach was a mere palette-swap. With training or effort, Nebula could probably have skipped even that.
Eventually though he's beaten out of Daroach, and while he could have just puppeteered an unconscious body, Kirby was there, so Nebula decided to just fight Kirby. He lost, of course, but note the one difference this time from all other Dark Matter battles: Kirby was not wielding a holy weapon. This is actually the realisation that kicked off the whole serious consideration into Dark Nebula. I do not believe the Triple Star is a holy weapon; it's only an elemental weapon.
So Dark Nebula wasn't actually killed, just sorely beaten. He escaped (somehow), and spent a long time recovering. He was weak enough that he sort of fell off 02's "radar"; the combination of 02 not caring about Nebula and Nebula's energy signature being so low kept him out of 02's eye for a while. He only resurfaced recently. Whether or not he and 02 will make up hasn't been decided yet, but they're... hanging out, at least. Nebula has no real choice now that 02's aware of him again.

The ego really fits him, I think. I like the obnoxious-kid-with-inflated-sense-of-importance aspect of him. It puts his stupidly easy boss battle in perspective and makes it kinda hilarious; he was too arrogantly focused on flashy attacks to pay attention to the corners of the screen!
Also, it's pretty interesting how he was defeated with a weaker weapon. I've never really put much thought into the Triple Star myself, particularly because it doesn't seem to have that holy schtick going for it. I'm not sure how I'll figure out Nebula for my own headcanon; I might just have to start with a mind map. Those seem to help.

funnily enough, his ego was only partially inspired by the easiness of his boss fight. the majority of it came from his name being "dark zero" in japan, which literally lead to me making up the whole "what if he went off on his own and pretended to be 02" on the spot when asked about him. i liked that enough to let it stick, and only came back to develop that much later.
the distinction there is that he was only "beaten", not actually killed, since it's extremely hard to "kill" a regular dark matter, let alone one of nebula's strength without a holy artefact. however the triple star was pretty powerful, and most importantly its attacks all seemed to be energy-based, which is the best way to tackle a dark matter since they can all render themselves intangible (and physical damage is just dampened on them anyway).

Bruh. Goofy headcanons are my LIFE.
I never really got the whole "Dark Zero" shebang going on in canon. That's one of the things I still need to work out. You managed to make it work in your headcanon, but mine is significantly different, so I'll have to do a few backflips to get it right. 'Tis the struggle of an excessively large story...
Also, I tend to make up headcanon as I go, too! Sometimes, just talking with someone about it helps you come up with stuff, and sometimes that stuff works really, really well. It's fun!

For a while I kind of ignored it because I really didn't want to have to deal with the possibility that "Dark Zero" was actually 02. I'm quite glad it was proven not to be the case.
