Seriously, she is one of my favorite anime characters. I actually developed a little bit of a crush on her when I was younger.

I think it's mostly because of the SM <---> DBZ concept.
DBZ was all muscle, SM was Takeuchi's answer to DBZ, the opposite of DBZ, DBZ was all about muscle and raw power, SM was all about beauty, elegance and generally aimed at girls that didn't like all the macho stuff from DBZ.
This does fit Makoto however.
