Description **A2, watercolour, ink and pencil**

So I guess I finally have to write an explanation of all this. OK, so to start with, from top to bottom we have (in the heraldry middle panel):

(NB heraldry diamonds that are around the edges, more incomplete than complete, are random designs, Noldor we do not know)

top row: Amras*, Celebrimbor*, Amrod*
2nd row: Nerdanel*, Miriel*
3rd row: Maedhros*, Finwë, Maglor*
4th row: Fëanor, Fingolfin
5th row: Fingon*, Finarfin, Turgon*
6th row: Aredhel, Idril
7th row: Finrod*, Galadriel*, Orodreth*
8th row: Gil-galad, Eärendil
9th row: Caranthir*, Celegorm*, Curufin*
(* - my designs, no * - Tolkien's original designs, if generally very slightly altered)

Note: female roundels. These were all given a small outer design to fit them into a diamond shape

Note: Finrod. *gasp* its not the right design, is it? Where now the harp and the harpstring, and the bright flames flowing from the torch? Well - they've gone. I don't like them. At all. There is some justification for this - it has been suggested that the flame and harp design was a device created for Finrod by Men, and that makes sense to me, as the design is much more like a man thingy than an elf thingy. There is also an old note from Tolkien saying that the rayed sun device of Finarfin extended down through his family - and so I've done that here ...

Elvish knotwork

The other new and cool thing (I think) in here is the knotwork panelling around the edges. If you look closely, you'll see that the knotwork contains places where 3 strands meet. This was done deliberately, in an attempt to create a different style of knotwork, something different from the traditions we normally see. It worked out as a very flowing style of knotwork, which I really like for the elvish designs.

And all the "brown" around the outside is gold really. Yes, it is! I promise: [link]

Your obvious dedication makes my brain hurt. Wonderful, it's really obvious that you've studied Tolkiens devices thoroughly.

This is freakin gorgeous!
I always like to make pretty little motifs, but have never managed anything like this. Beautifully symetrical and meaningful. Would make an amazing tapestry if someone could do it.
Thanks for the fav by the way
Peg

HI,

I really like your designs and was wondering, did you design Maedhros's device, or did you find an existing device by Tolkien? And if so, where? I'm very interested in it, and if I ever get to it I'd like to use it on a cloak broach for a series of 1/6 scale figures I'm attempting to make of some of my favorite Elves.

Thanks,

Nerys

I keep being drawn back to this one (partly because I refuse to mark it as read in my devwatch) and I think I just realized why... thats the same geometric pattern that I'm working with right now hahaha I really like how you've used it, very different from what I'm doing and for a different purpose, but beautifully done Those overlapping circles and diamonds are just too enticing for me, can't resist 'em

This is the most wonderful tapestry I've ever seen. I suppose that all the different patterns do exist as single pictures in your gallery, but nevertheless I want to ask you to upload this one here in a very big resolution. Please. ^^

not *all* of them, a few I changed and fiddled with and Nerdanel's is a new design I don't really want to upload a big version here, but if you note me your email, I'll send you a copy privately!

This is so gorgeous! I've been re-reading the Silmarillion and I think it does justice to the "feel" of the Noldor and to Tolkien's own illustrations. Wonderful!

thank you thank you, that comment means a lot to me - any time I do a Silmarillion picture, that's what I aim for. Keeping in with the feel of the original, trying to make something that Tolkien would approve of.

Tolkien's work has an underlying beautiful simplicity that I think a lot of people forget about or don't see. And I think that a lot of the really good Tolkien art shows that, in whichever way the artist chooses to see it.

I agree. Get rid of the harp and the harpstring.

Sorry couldn't help it. Whatever the justifications - it is extremely beautiful.

Very lovely. I love the variety in the designs, while still keeping it clear that they represent a single line. Nicely done. I also really like the knotwork around the edges, reminds me of vines on a trellis in winder, with no leaves left. Very much in keeping with the style of the Elves.

Just wow. You studied the emblems very well and your self-designed ones are not noticeable to be from an other hand than Tolkien's. The knotwork with the three strands is a very good idea. Who does not know it sees, that there is something different but does not at the first glance see what it is I think.
Really impressive
