This one...
...this one is a particular sore point for me.
The point of the original exchange is that Applejack simply knows this stuff. Not because "she has a phd", but because she is smart and is aware of the nature of the universe she's in.
The same goes for the other four...they don't have phds because they don't need them, they are simply smart enough to understand how their universe works.
The whole "they all have phds" always felt like a bad joke that not only undermined the actual intelligence of the Mane Five, but shoe-horned comedy into what was always meant as a serious, dramatic conversation.
If there's one thing from the Riseverse I wish I could go back and change, is to erase this inane comedy shtick, and set in stone that NO, the Mane Five DON'T have phds, they don't need them to understand what Twilight is talking about.
