Description Deep Impact

Diamond Island, Bicheno, Tasmania, Australia

2 kilometres north of the quiet East Coast Tasmanian town of Bicheno is a small island by the name of Diamond Island, a private property owned by the resort a short walk from the island. The island can be reached when the tide is low, exposing a small sand bank connecting the island with the mainland, which can be accessed by foot. On this island is a vast array of wildlife, including a rookery of a few thousand little penguins.

The photo here has been taken from the far west end of the island, looking out over part of the east coast. Unfortunately the tide was not very high and the wind was not the strongest at the time, so catching big surf on the camera proved a little trying, and took some patience. I didn't have my tripod on me either, so the image is slightly blurry in places due to the fading sunset light. This was the best image in my opinion out of the 100 or so I took of the pounding surf. I'm quite happy with the way the image turned out, and I hope you agree also. A gradual sunset filter was used to cast some warmer colours on the image.

Thanks for taking the time to view it!

NB: `londonxpress has inspired me to write more info on each of my photos, to give you, the viewer, a little more insight into how the photo was captured and any intentions I had in taking it at the time, and also some general background info on the locations.

I'm amazed at all the motion you got in a relatively short time exposure, it's like a starburst of energy.

Beautiful capture, well done. I think perhaps you could've done with a slightly faster shutter speed? To make the water from the splash sharper.

I don't have all that much experience in it all to say really, but I think it may have made the image a little more effective.

It's not a bad picture in any way though.. truely gorgeous, &I credit you on the composition. =]

You're right I probably should've used a smaller aperture and faster shutter speed to capture the splash... but I was probably thinking at the time that I wanted more wave movement ... oh well. Thanks for the heads up though!

I can see why you like this shot so much. Indeed, it is something, and taking waves shots; even better. I love it, the soft colors, the sharp textures on the rocks, the wave reaching out to the world, and so much more. It would be a shame if I didn't fav this, it well deserves it. =]
Wonderful job! Keep up the work!

That's very beautiful . I love the warm tones on the splash part (sorry, don't know my beach terms ), and especially the hint of gold in it. It almost looks fake to me, and I thought it was a painting at first. But anyway, very nice.
