Description
I had a bad headache all yesterday and couldnβt concentrate on anything important so I drew myself a velociraptor and coloured them like Blue from Jurassic World because you can be feathered and scary.

Quite a cool look for her. She looks almost cute and terrifying at the same time.

Velociraptors were usually at the size of turkeys. Now imagine being attacked by carnivorous trukeys

Ever been attacked by a flock of turkeys? I promise it would be terrifying.

My grandmother was chased down the road by a turkey, trust me they can be scary too.

I've not personally been chased by turkeys, but the geese and swans can certainly get me running!

Honestly even though actual velociraptors were feathery and the size of medium dogs, that's still scary as shit.

True, I wouldn't want to be attacked by a pack of small velociraptors either, it just means it'll take longer to kill you. I really don't get this idea that if something is feathery it can't be scary though, it's like saying a lion isn't scary because we have pet cats. Still going to kill you.

Yep, pretty much. Well also, geese my man. They're demonic hellspawn and scary as well. Heck, they have enough power to break bones.

Geese are terrifying and they don't even want to kill you! ...now imagine them with a 3 inch claw and a taste for flesh! *hides* xD
(I mean people use geese as guard dogs for a reason, no one messes with them.)

Yyyep. Hooooly cattle if that were the case we'd be screwed. Hahaha.
Not even just Holy "Cow", but "Cattle" because if we had geese like that you'd be exclaiming for the whole goddamn herd right there.
Even worse is imagine if many other bird species that looked even generally cuter or less vicious had some kind of bloodlust and certain adaptations specifically suited to killing, humans included. Yikes.

We would be examining the cattle and hoping the geese preferred beef..
Secretly, all birds never forgot they were once dinosaurs. They are just waiting for their chance again.

Personally, the JP raptor look has grown on me too much. That aside, it is a good sight to see an accurate take on a JP dinosaur. Keep it up.

The JP raptor is iconic and will always be part of us, but I do hate how it's impacted actual palaeontology. I understand why they can't change it, but I feel like they could have fixed certain things (eg the hands) and had a nod to true velociraptors by say having a brief scene showing them in JW as a separate exhibit.
That said, this was just something fun because I wanted to see how she would look rather then "Booooo JP is bad!". I'm probably going to add the rest later and maybe Rexy too.

They at least said in JW that "pure" dinosaurs would look very different and that they look the way they do in the franchise as a result of having to fill in genetic gaps, environmental convenience, and maximum possible entertainment value; an important acknowledgement I'm glad they made. Your version of Blue seems like what would happen if the JP/JW scientists focused a little more on realism while still trying to keep to an "entertainment value quota".
On a side note, it'd be very interesting and bold if in JW3 someone made updated, scientifically accurate dinosaurs and they came into contact with the Nublar species.

That's true and I'm grateful for that line, although I disagree with it some as I think part of the love of JP was the cutting edge dinosaurs and I feel JW missed a beat by not updating the designs (it would be easy to explain in world too). Also I disagree that people would stop finding dinosaurs interesting, or not find accurate dinosaurs interesting, but anyway...
Thanks though! I wanted to keep her cool looking rather then cute, although I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive.
Ooh I would love it if they did that! Just seeing them interacting together and then making mixed flocks would be fantastic. Plus with the raptors imagine the expressions they could make with feathers and crests rather then just *snarl* faces. It would be great!

Dionette In reply to ElementalSpirits [2018-08-13 02:08:22 +0000 UTC]
True, but I think the point of the JW franchise was to reawaken the JP franchise and they did that, in part, by evoking nostalgia (aΒ lot). The last one, JW3, came out in 2001 and ended up causing a lot of backlash. Suddenly changing the designs of the dinosaurs 14 years later, even if they would be more scientifically accurate, might not have beenΒ a good idea for bringing back the fans, especially those very dedicated to the original. It's also not that people wouldn't be interested in dinosaurs/accurate dinosaurs, but that over time they'd begin losing their thrill, considering that new assets were being made bigger, scarier, "more teeth", they're trying to recapture their initial spike in attendance with thrillers.
Yeah, though I doubt a turkey-sized raptor would be able to mate with Blue. Feathers could help in subtle emotions and emphasize others, although they doΒ a good job in expressing through body language and vocalization.

I see that, and as I said I can understand why they couldn't change the raptors (and the t-rex as she is the same dino) but a lot of the others I don't think the changes would be great enough to turn people off, such as changing triceratops rhino foot or fixing anatomy we either now know better or have better technology to replicate. It's not all about making drastic changes like sticking feathers on everything, because not everything had feathers, but we do have a better idea of scale and marking patterns that would make them more believable. I don't know, maybe it's just me but I just feel that was the magic of the first films.
Yeah I know they were supposed to be loosing their thrill because everyone had seen them, but I still don't see that. People still go to zoos regularly without loosing the thrill because they see lions on TV, and there is literally only one dinosaur park, for most people it would probably be a once in a life time trip so I can't see numbers dropping off. Still it does sound like something an executive would come up with.
Well as Ian would say "Life will find a way" xD (That or they could just say the feathered ones are Deinonychus and then problem solved with the height)

I understand where you're coming from; the fact that the dinosaurs were scientifically accurate for the time the first trilogy came out, and that now the francize has them stuck the way they are. But I guess it's like Dr. Wu said, "Bigger, scarier...But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth". They favored consistency (good and bad).
