In the last year, most of the time I dedicated to photography, was used in shooting long exposures and studying the masters of blur. I enjoyed it so much that I started a photographic project on it. I was attracted by the ghost effect the use of the flash gives to subjects in movement during long exposures.

To obtain this effect you only need a camera with manual settings and a flash. I used an Olympus XZ2 camera.
Besides composition, 3 are the important things to keep in mind in this kind of photo:
- shutter speed: between 1 sec e 1/4 of sec.
- flash: adjust its intensity according to light conditions.
- in order to leave a ghost trail the subject has to be moving!

Usually I prefer shooting indoor and during the evening, because my Olympus camera doesn't allow me to go further f8 stop, but if you can, you can shoot outdoor as well.

Look for a background where light and shadows interchange and start shooting moving subjects, paying attention to the background, because it will show up in your image.
The secret for a good result, is understanding and foreseeing the kind of solidity the subject will have in the final image and what background will show up behind the subject. A strong light will make the subject more transparent (the stronger the light, the less visibile will be the subject), while a lower light will give you a more solid subject (the darker the more solid will be the subject). The flash contrasts the background light, so you have to adjust it according to the light conditions. I suggest you to shoot a couple of test photos, so to set the camera as best as you can.
This is just a little and humble tutorial on how to take this kind of photo, but since that 'practice makes perfect', you need to go out and start shooting. At first it will be a bit complicated and difficult, but once you master the technique, everything will come automatically and easy to you.
