sunny dewdrops hang in the air,
a thousand bored offspring of
   ephemeral nights
they settle on your fingertips
strong and milky, touching my lips
                “goodbye”

i am floating on royal air,
exhaling stars  and the yoyo moon;
powdered milky way
dusting my cheeks
    two best friends quietly walk through the dark
past trumpet vines that crawl
to the top of summer’s backbone
dropping their flowers in an orange pile
   on the dirt

tonight we chase the waning moon--
shes got us in her web,
but she just keeps running
   (as long as this song keeps playing we will never give up)
still, i can’t ignore
the night’s insistence on
“goodbye”
