You're right, EQ isn't manga - but it's one of the first American series that was inspired by the manga style (it first came out back in the 70's, I believe... not that I was around back then.)
Oh, and you don't need to buy it! All the comics (well, almost) are online for free over at Elfquest.com!

Same here. Some of my earliest drawings were tracings of the elves and it just went from there.
