Description
I know there are lots of typos! Can't fix them on the computer I'm using now, will do as soon as I get home! Thanx! ^^Disclaimer-ish warning:
I repeat, this is just how I work. I'm not saying this is the way to work. It's not. And yes, there are countless better artists on DA who have made countless better tutorials, but I was asked to make something like this soooo.... I did ^^

I usually just paint many, many layers with low opacity to blend the colors.
(Usually the regular hard round brush at about 10 - 15 % opacity.)
And sometimes, the soft round brush.
I try to avoid the water tool and the blur tool because I'm quite bad at using them >.< The skin always ends up looking like warped plastic, ^^ But you do what works for you!^^

ohhh i see ! Wow, you do take a lot of effort to make the pictures look so unique, now i'm an even bigger fangirl *laughs*
Oh, i actually abuse the water/blur tool a little bit, but it's probably because i see so many artists advising it 8 | *headdesks* but again, my art is more inclined to anime *laughs*

Teachers shouldn't care wether you use the dodge tool, they should only teach you how to look at your work so you'll be able to improve on it, that you see your own mistakes and strengths. They shouldn't care at all what tools you use.
Like wether your pencil costs 10 bucks or 25 ct, it's about what you do with it. You can make art with dirt for all I care, and you would rock at that too, I'm sure!
I think the basic comment on the dodge tool is, you won't know what it'll do with your colors, 'cause it kinda seems to change it. But you seem to make use of that, and have still painted over them, as far as I can see. Remember, it's just a tool, and whatever you do with it is cool.

"wether your pencil costs 10 bucks or 25 ct"... my first year of college my art teacher wanted us to buy super-expensive materials... I was like NOPE! You can dock me a grade if you want, but that's pointless!! I don't remember what happened, if I gave in or she did!

Oh, I agree with you! (Except for the making-art-with-dirt-part...) However, just as you said - the dodge-tool is somewhat unreliable and can handle colors...weirdly. It can make great light effects, but sometimes it just looks fake.
But, yes, I agree 100% with you on the rest. Even though, sadly, some teachers(and random critics) do care about the tools you use. Heh, I know people who use the blur/dodge/burn/whatnot-tools like maniacs and make the most wonderful art... but try not to disclose the way they work, because the critique gets 200% harsher.

The one I use is small too! A3 size. I used to have an A4 size tablet before, which is much bigger of course, but I find that the smaller one works just as fine. IMO at least

poor you! I laughed hard, when I read this! but never mind. I think your work looks great - although it is kind of messy. but sometimes that's exactly why I like them, because in all that messiness you still find some great realism. poetic me.
