I've never actually seen the Matrix, other than a small bit of Hugo's, and yes, I think he is a fantastic actor

Elrond. One of my childhood crushes, before the movies came out. I thought that in the LoTR movies they completely changes his original personality. Instead of serene, kind and often smiling, we see someone bitter and savagely pessimistic. Furthermore, his animosity towards Aragorn is ridiculous, since he raised him as a son. The relationship between the two was lacking in the movies. Yes, in the books, too, he did worry abut Arwen's fate, but he did not spit out words such as "MEN ARE WEEEEAK".
Pfff. I was glad to see that in the Hobbit they did him more justice. He was a pleasure to watch.

I've actually always liked the way Elrond was played, Hugo fit him perfectly.

Hugo was brilliant. I adore him. I just didn't like the biting bitterness, because it just wasn't part of the Elrond Tolkien had written. And that wasn't Hugo's fault, it was the director's choice.

Yes, very true, but I saw it more as the difference in times; in the Hobbit, Middle-earth had been at peace for 3000 years, Arwen wasn't betrothed to Aragorn yet and would probably accompany him and her brothers to the Undying Lands, whereas sixty years later, darkness had fallen, he was going to have to part from his daughter forever, and the time of the Elves was ending, and the extended editions show a little bit more of a "fatherly" side toward Aragorn, which helps to reinterpret the rest, I think.
