Description
This was one of the pieces I did that landed me the gig on ElfQuest: Blood of Ten Chiefs. While I was on Christmas break from SVA, visiting my parents in Houston, I found out the Pinis were going to be doing a signing at a comic shop about 300 miles away in the next week!Needless to say, I was amped up -- and feeling a bit cocky because I was in my last year at the School of Visual arts in Manhattan. So, I stayed up for 3 days straight, cranking out a number of model sheets and a set of Elfquest-specific pages that I was going to show my heroes.
I drove to the signing with no sleep and handed off my art. Unfortunately, the Pinis didn't seem to have a very good reaction to my work and I made the long drive home more than a little dejected. What I didn't realize was that they did like my work and gave it over to Barry Blair. In these days before the Internet (this was in 1993), Barry had to track me down by phone -- leaving a message at my parent's house since I hadn't been smart enough to leave my dorm number! In about February of 1994, I met up with Barry (and Delfin Barral, who was also getting work on EQ at the same time) and the rest is history. They quickly moved me up to Poughkeepsie and put me to work!
It all started with this piece! Find out more about my new comic at the official ElfSong website - [link]

So...did Treestump just sit on something pointy or see something completely unexpected?
Very nice expressions!

They were probably just being hard on you because they saw your potential. Congrats on getting the job back then.

That and they were probably busy with the comic store signing I barged my way in to. I had a lot of ego back then (I was 19 or 20 at the time) and just assumed they'd hire me on the spot. Of course, being insane from lack of sleep probably didn't help make the greatest of impressions on them!

Awesome!!
I can understand how dejected you must have felt when the Pini's didn't responded as expected. It was probably because you were so tired. But it's obvious they liked your art nonetheless and why wouldn't they? It IS good!

I'm sure I didn't make a good impression and may have looked insane. Thanks for the nice words about my work, tho!

As someone who had been a fan of Elfquest since he was a kid in the early 80s, it was an amazing experience to get to work with the Pinis and Barry Blair on the Elfquest stuff. To this day I can't believe my luck!
