Description
I know some of the shoes pictured are ugly. lol. I was trying to find non dressy shoes thus we get ugly. lol.Shoes do fold but I rarely show this unless I'm doing boots or large dolls. Reason being they just won't show up much in a smaller picture so why in pixels?
If you must have folds in your shoes it's right where the foot bends. so a bit above where the toes connect to the bridge of the foot.
(Feel free to save the image and zoom up on it if anything I'm about to tell you doesn't make sense.)
First you want to draw your outline. Depending on the type of toe you want make sure to shoe that. Sometimes you have to exaggerate the shape of the feet. Remember not to use too mush of the feet's outline for your shoes.
Next you need to draw the sole of the shoes. This can vary slightly depending on the shoe but we're doing flats so one or two pixels is good. on the foot facing forwards only part of the sole shows. If both feet are facing forward even less shows. (see lesson one for example)So if you shoes have a tounge that should be drawn in the outline stage just as you would the sole.
Shoelaces can come last I've just drawn them in step 1 to help tell the shoes apart.
Next comes shading. If your shoe is split into sections then each section should be shaded. I recomend filling the shoe with white so you don't get tempted to use the base shading.
The only time this is ok is with really small dolls. and even then you have to deviate slightly.
Each part of the shoe should be shaded separately. this includes the tounge, sole, any rubber parts, or each side of the shoe along the tounge.
Now for shading. I'll be honest a little pillow shading is ok for small/medium dolls. For larger ones it's not.
Typically I use four to five colors including the outline color on small-ish base like DHF sized and maybe less for even smaller bases. I'm going to assume you already have your outline drawn. Then with color 2 I outline the side of the shoe.
Note:If your doll is facing left then I make the right side the side I start shading on. (so the opposite side of what the doll is facing will be in shadow.) If you are light sourcing then shade appropriately. If the shadows on the clothes are on the opposite side then shade opposite what I am doing.
Anyways...
Make sure to pull the shading up the toe a little bit on the other side. This helps the shoe look more rounded when you are done. also square lines are ok for this part.
Next outline the shading you've just done and the outline around the bridge of the foot. Only use squared lines if nessicary. Try to avoid them if you can.
Depending on how much room is left in the shoe fill in with your last color or repeat the last step and then fill with he last color. When shading the tounge of the shoe, You will want to sort of repeat what we did on the sides. Second darkest color along one side. Then repeat with each color. Square lines are ok only with first color.
Lastly shading the sole:
I make the sole a different color usually. The two shades of grey is fine. Make the outline your darker color and then fill with the second.
For laces I typically use a different color entirely and draw my bow with one shade and the laces with another.
For straps make them the same color as the outline or slightly darker.
