I think it's because Neji is strong, cold, and sure of himself, and hinata is frail (not weak! >.<
In my opinion, they're the very definition of yinyang. Both opposites but similar, complementing eachother.

I never told you that I tought NejiHina was the ONLY pairing out there, as your brain's processing capabilities has wrongfuly interpreted (no, I'm not joking, I don't know you enough to joke like that, and quite frankly, I don't want to),I was just telling you my point of view on NejiHina. I also never said NejiTen couldn't happen, I AM open to idea of some other couple happening (NaruHina, KibaHina, NejiTen, etc., etc.) I respect whatever other people like, even if I myself don't like it.
I'm sure you could send me a "bunch of crap" about NejiTen. I say "ok", but it seems you want to shove said bunch of crap down my throat, which I wasn't doing with my NejiHina interpretations (I would never call my pro NejiHina arguments "crap").

Why would I not want to talk to somebody who doesn't share my opinions? Talking with someone that has different points of view makes you broaden your own knowledge.I;m not a wimp, I can defend my ideas when I feel they're being attacked in any way.

Actually, Kishimoto stated that Sasuke's parents--Uchiha Fugaku and Mikoto--were cousins.
However, on the Hyuuga front, I don't really think NejiHina has a chance of happening--though it is cute to dream about. Unfortunately, Kishimoto has a prejudice against pairings. Also, I don't thing it really... fits with the character progression. But still, it's fairly clear that Kishimoto has no ~*moral obligations*~ against cousincest.

But, I do agree that pairings are likely not going to happen in Naruto...maybe the main characters at the very least.
And cousinxcousin has happened in anime. Oh and cousinxcousin relationships don't only happen on the feudal era, there are cousin couples all over the world in the present.

Yeah, but Neji and Hinata aren't just cousins, they're half-siblings by blood. I don't think Hiashi would ever allow a branch family member who's Hinata's half-brother to marry her.

Hinata is superior by birth, and Neji is superior by skills and such. I think they'd be equal. Besides, it would be lowly of Hiashi as a clan leader to disregard Hinata, a main branch member, his daughter, and the successor of the clan, just because she holds feelings with Neji.
Hiashi IS taking up interest on Neji. Not only to remind him to preserve the Hyuuga Clan's purity, but to protect Hinata. Hizashi did entrust that responsibility to him, and Neji happily accepted it. =/

What's more, although they met for the first time at three years of age, they must have seen quite a bit of each other after that, evidenced by Kiba's statement in the Japanese manga "Neji is cruel to you". Which means Kiba knows it too, because he must either have seen Neji being cruel or heard about it from Hinata. Either way, doesn't look like love, thank goodness.

Yes, they might be close physically and genetically, but they were socially apart. Yes, they obviously see each other quite often, since they live in the same place, albeit I think Neji avoids her. And Neji's not cruel to Hinata anymore. In fact, he supports her for her well-being. :]

And by that, Hinata will never improve. :] She'll never become stronger since she'll never go against Naruto. She'll never grow a backbone. She won't be...hmmm...independent. And, it only shows that Neji KNOWS what Hinata feels. He could analyze her and what she feels. Hinata will never bring to tell people her problems, and Neji will know what's bothering her without saying a word or making her uncomfortable.
And *I think I've said this before* to be close to her, to know her and her feelings in such a short time, it's amazing how he was mostly out of his "hatred" for Hinata in that short time. ^o^

About the NejiTen hints. There's a lot to be said, actually, starting from the fact that whenever she appears, Tenten is 90% of the time placed in the same panel as Neji. In the anime, she appears with Neji, always. There is no other female character as close to him as Tenten, and that's a fact.
Then the amount of things she knows about him, like every move of his, and the cursed seal, shows that they must have spent a lot of time together for Neji to trust her with those secrets. Also, just take a look at the meaning of Tenten's name. "Sky". Metaphorically speaking, that's what Neji longs for as a caged bird, to gain the freedom of the sky. Caged bird, Sky. Gets you thinking, doesn't it?
What's more, there's a big symbology linked to the whole of Team Gai. To cut a long story short, Neji's personality, the fact he identifies with birds, the date of his birth, and a couple other things point to one of the Four Chinese Celestial guardians, who takes the shape of a phoenix. Tenten's original design, her date of birth, her jutsu, the meaning of her name, the fact she is quite obviously Chinese point to another of the Guardians, the dragon. Not by any chance, Phoenix and Dragon represent lovers in Japanese culture.
It's also a point in favor of NejiTen that lots of images can be found in the manga, and screenshots in the anime, that depict them together, whether it is fighting/talking/Tenten giving Neji a drink of water/Neji rescuing Tenten. Don't forget the famous Water Prison scene. Even the animators are pretty pro-NejiTen, just take a look at the omakes at the end of various episodes where they appear together and explain stuff about the different Clans, with Tenten giggling, teasing Neji and making him blush. In the games too, there are a few hints such as Neji feeling sorry because he can't train with Tenten and has to train with Naruto instead.
Of course Neji knows what's bothering Hinata. And that is, her secret feelings for Naruto. So, she's thinking about another guy, and he couldn't care less and doesn't show the FAINTEST sign of jealousy. That just doesn't work. But, he doesn't know her feelings because he knows her well, it's because Neji can read people like that. Hinata in particular is very easy to read, what with her twitching and stuttering, and even a blind person would notice her crush on Naruto. She faints when he's in a 10 meter radius!
Also, no, Neji and Tenten aren't shown together if not during missions, but that's simply because it's the only times they're shown. Anyway, Team Gai is famous for obsessing over training, working hard from morning til night, which means Neji and Tenten are together most of the time. Even Neji being made a Jounin wasn't enough to get him taken off Team Gai! It shows how close they all are. And in reference to recent chapters, (stop reading if you haven't been following the manga or I'll spoil it for you!) Hinata is in the village, with half the hospital having fallen on top of her head, while Neji is with his team. You might have noticed that the other teams (Team Asuma and Kurenai) have broken up to fight with their families, but it's pretty certain that Neji, once back in Konoha, won't be fighting with the Hyuugas, but with Tenten, and Gai and Lee.
And the databook proves that Neji doesn't spend his time sparring with Hinata, because it says that Hinata's desired opponents are Hiashi, who's busy with Hanabi, and Neji, who's busy with Tenten. Kishimoto has made Tenten Neji's sparring partner. Not Lee, not Hinata, Tenten. It's undeniable that she's the person closest to him. Neji and Hinata, aside from that little accident during the Chunin Exams, are never seen together again except in one page- and they're not even in the same panel. Tenten is shown to be with Neji constantly.
And that's why NejiTen is considered one of the most canon pairings in Naruto, and NejiHina is more often than not labelled crack. ^^"

Yeah, they've never been on a mission together. In fact Neji hasn't been shown with Hinata in the last 400 chapters...and yeah, he never tried to help her, he tried to kill her. xD
LeeTen isn't canon, but it's a possible pairing, unlike NejiHina.
I'm on here because initially I was backing up a person's (truthful) statement regarding Neji's and Hinata's true parentage. Someone just refused to believe they're half siblings, which they are. Then I got involved in a peaceful discussion with someone else. That's all there is to it.

Actually they have been shown together in fillers and in the manga before the only reason they havent been shown together in the manga or anime is because he's with lee tenten and gai, his teammates and sensei. NejiTen isnt canon either. NejiHina is possible, NejiTen fans just dont want to believe it cuz its in the way of NejiTen's possibility. But really I dont think you should have commented at all and leave the dumb NejiTen fan to his/her own business, they got into it and should finish it. NejiHina fans do know there cousins but jackasses wont leave them alone. So really you shouldnt have kept arguing at all, especially on a NejiHina art.

Of course. They're teammates. They have to spend more time. As teammates. And, they both wouldn't like to train with Lee or Gai because of their peculiar training system. Neji trains with Tenten to challenge his blind spot, since Tenten is an all-round attacker and weapon expert, she can help him with his Kaiten and other Gentle Fist-accessed abilities.

Also, I might add that you do have a point concerning the Four Celestial Guardians. The Positive Signs (where Hinata and Naruto's Zodiac signs fall under) and Negative Signs (where Neji and Tenten's Zodiac Signs fall under as well) may show that Positive and Positive / Negative and Negative are compatible with each other. But look:
"They (Positive Signs) are termed "positive" because they tend to be more communicative, buoyant and sociable - broadly matching the extrovert personality, aiming for a large number of friends and to focusing on working with them rather than on their own resources."
Why is Hinata more of the polar opposite of her own sign? She doesn't like to be in big groups. She is aiming to become stronger to prove herself to the clan. She's glued to her goal. Most likely the opposite of her sign.
I also recall, that Neji is the Wind Type, not the Fire Type. Since the phoenix is most likely the fire type, whereas Neji is most likely the wind type.
And since Hinata is a little more sociable than Neji. Yet, they are very much alike, I think that their relationship would work out. If Hinata has a problem, she won't say it and hesitate if she should do it or not. If Tenten has a problem, she'd deal it on her own. How can Neji help Tenten if she is independent? and Hinata wouldn't want to tell Neji (or everyone, for that matter) her problems.
If Naruto were to serve as an inspiration to Hinata and he'd strengthen her instead of Neji, she'd crumble down instead. He'd cheer for her recklessly, and he won't hold back. She'd try her best, yes, but didn't you notice in the anime that two of the "Team 8 + Naruto" missions failed? Naruto's strong on words and actions, but sometimes his actions would be unexpected enough for something in their mission to distort (i.e. Naruto cutting the cheese... *forget that it's a filler, it's somewhat "important" in the anime*).

Ah yes, the Water Prison Scene. The NejiTen labled it as the Fanservice episode. And...I did not see Neji blush at all. ^^

And you might be thinking, that why do I like NejiHina and back it up with Japan's culture; the culture of cousin marriage, which drives to the point of saying that NejiHina is the most popular pairing in Japan. They don't like it because it's cute and all that, they most likely like it because it's in their culture and they don't find NejiHina disgusting and such. Other animes have cousin / sibling interactions too... (like Fruits Basket, CCS, Elfen Lied, Shugo Chara!...)

If I recall, after the famous Water Prison episode, I saw that Neji didn't blush. And the piggyback ride. Yes, when Tenten told Neji that he got into Lee and Gai's race, Neji shrugged it off and said "Don't be ridiculous." in a seemingly irritated voice.
To the manga: Oh, and even though Tenten didn't blush when she watched Lee train, she looked at him with admiration in her eyes. Did she ever give Neji that look in the manga?
And, saying that the animators are pro-NejiTen, that could give prejudice to fans of other pairings. In the manga, when Ino placed her hand on Shikamaru's shoulder, she was near him. But in the anime, oh look, they decided to distance it a little and that mad NejiTen look more intimate and fluffy. That'd be a little unfair to the fans, y'know.
It's also irritating to see obsessed NejiTen fans manipulating the pictures to make it seem that Neji smiled when he caught Tenten. D:

They were just back from a mission (proof: Tenten said she was tired and asked that they should have a break). How could Neji know that his comrades fought with their respective families when he just came back from a missiom? His team members' family members weren't even known.

Neji frequently trains with Hiashi as well. Hiashi requests Hinata to learn from their sparring sessions as well. Right now, I think that Hinata is doing a good job proving herself to the clan. You didn't see Hiashi yapping about Hanabi's awesomeness when he was training with Neji. Hinata improved, and Hiashi disregarding her is not honorable for a clan leader. Rules are rules.

Considered to be canon, not officially canon. That's all. Almost all of the Naruto pairings formed are fanon. The only canon I see are Asuma x Kurenai, Hayate x Yugao, and the teens' parents. (Maybe ShikaTema is close to canon as well? XP *shot*)
Also, how IS NejiHina crack? They've met each other, they've talked to each other, they have relations to each other, something already happened between them two. Crack pairing is like...SuiHina. o3o

But all this closeness to Hinata is merely assumed on your part, because they're never shown or mentioned to spend time with each other, at all. When a mangaka wants to hint to pairings, he makes sure to show the characters together. About NejiTen panel time, it could actually be a big factor. Just think AsumaKurenai. There was no real confirmation that they were together in the first part, but they were always SEEN together. And in Shippuden, Kurenai's pregnant. Quality above quantity? But the only quality in the single non-violent scene where Neji and Hinata appear shows him encouraging him to run to another man. If Neji ever told Tenten to run to Lee, I'd so totally go emo, because it'd pretty much be confirmation that there were no feelings there. NejiTen has quality and quantity, and the animators give it more depth, bless them. It's in their very names! The bird and the Sky. Doesn't get more obvious than that. Tenten holds Neji in higher regard than anyone else: the smile she gives Gai and Lee in the manga isn't admiring at all, it's cheeky. She's just happy that her team is back to the way it was before Neji's defeat/Lee's injury.
(Have to agree with you about the Shikatema possible canon-ness, although I'd keep an eye on ShikaShiho developements!!)
Ino and Shikamaru aren't often shown together, in the same panel. They just happen to appear together (with Chouji) occasionally. There are absolutely no ShikaIno hints anywhere, I have no idea where the shippers are getting it from. It's one of those pairings that...just...make no sense if you ask me. o.o
The closeness between Team Gai members isn't common to the other teams. All the other teams atm have broken up to fight. Like I said, Team Gai certainly won't break up, simply because they are each other's family. It reamins to be seen, of course, but it's a pretty safe bet.
Also, you can't have missed the NaruHina streak in the latest chapter. Hinata's never shown any interest in anyone but Naruto, and she isn't shown in anyone's company besides Shino and Kiba (Kiba more- in fact, I don't mind KibaHina). Her screentime with Neji is nil. It's not hinted, it's not mentioned, it's just not there. And if it were there, it would be censored in the anime. Kishi won't be creating a pairing (out of the blue, that he's never even hinted at) that would create trouble for the animators. NejiHina is a crack pairing just as much as ItaSasu is. The hate is/was there, the sibling relationship is there. What else is missing? NejiSaku has more chance of becoming canon than NejiHina. They're not even compatible personality-wise.

In any case, most of the Naruto audience knows about the half-sibling relationship of Neji and Hinata, which is why the pairing's drastically decreased in popularity even when it was never successful in the first place. I just can't ship a sibling pairing, especially not an incompatible one. If Neji and Hanabi were the same age, and not so closely related, I wouldn't mind NejiHana, but NejiHina doesn't work out in any way. With Neji's personality, an outspoken girl is needed to balance out his broody side. It's a stereotypical pairing, actually, present in most manga. The silent cool guys never get together with the shy stammering silent girls, but with girls who can encourage them to open up a bit. Neji's always irritated. Tenten can take it, she thinks it's funny and always teases him knowing what his reactions will be. Hinata couldn't take it, she doesn't have any self-confidence to start with, Neji would just destroy it even more. That's why major Hinata pairings are NaruHina and KibaHina- Hinata herself needs someone to boost her confidence.

Neji doesn't always have to spend his time with Team Gai. Since he does spar with Hiashi sometimes...Hinata can observe them (never mind that she makes food for them, Hiashi asks her to watch, so yeah.) Neji and Tenten spend time with each other because they are teammates. Shikamaru and Ino are also teammates (so, yay they spend more time with each other!), but I see more development in ShikaTema...
When a mangaka wants to hint to pairings, he makes sure to show the characters together.
Hnnn...Remember Hayate? Why is Hayate x Yugao a canon pairing? I recall, that there wasn't any panel sowing if they were together. (At least, that's what I see.) Even though he is unimportant, canon is canon. It's not always the case wherein they show two characters together, that it means there's something going on between them.
About NejiTen panel time, it could actually be a big factor. Just think AsumaKurenai. There was no real confirmation that they were together in the first part, but they were always SEEN together. And in Shippuden, Kurenai's pregnant.

Neji became a jounin, Tsunade was a very aspiring Hokage, Sakura's on her way on surpassing Tsunade, Gaara became Kazekage...if Hinata was to marry Naruto, clans are ruled by the man/husband, it may not be the Hyuuga clan they know anymore. The Hyuuga reputation is dead. Hinata would be the worst leader for bringing them down to nothingness just because of "love". Marriage doesn't need love to be done, in fact, it was mostly done in the past to preserve family matters to themselves. Endogamy, that's what it is. 8D
I think Neji encouraged Hinata to see Naruto because he can observe that she's strong with him (well, not seeing him in years will sadden her, so Neji stops and encourages her to see him, so that she'll be happy. He's looking out for her happiness n.n. Shows how he's concerned for her and her feelings. Don't see Neji doing that to Tenten whatsoever).

If Neji ever told Tenten to run to Lee, I'd so totally go emo, because it'd pretty much be confirmation that there were no feelings there. NejiTen has quality and quantity, and the animators give it more depth, bless them.

Despite Hinata being free, she's still caged, and the awaiting bird in the cage will be full of determination and willpower and that can lead her well. ^^-

Tenten holds Neji in higher regard than anyone else: the smile she gives Gai and Lee in the manga isn't admiring at all, it's cheeky. She's just happy that her team is back to the way it was before Neji's defeat/Lee's injury.
She admires Neji for his strength, and capability. I see her admiring Lee for being very hardworking. I'm happy to see that Tenten is very hardworking as well. I think they'd be compatible. They're hard workers. Although Tenten would be ignorant to a man's assistance...
The way I see her smile is that she holds admiration for him for working really hard, working really hard to defeat a prodigy like Neji.
The closeness between Team Gai members isn't common to the other teams. All the other teams atm have broken up to fight. Like I said, Team Gai certainly won't break up, simply because they are each other's family. It reamins to be seen, of course, but it's a pretty safe bet.
Team Gai had no idea the others went their separate ways. The other teams are very close as well (Kiba, Hinata, and Shino still together despite Kurenai being broken-hearted; InoShikaChou still a strong team despite of their great loss, Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi still strong-willed despite of Sasuke's betrayal...), and I don't see the other senseis leading their team to battle. Kurenai's pregnant (and I wonder if she's alright ;~; ), Asuma's dead, Kakashi's seemingly dead, Iruka and the others are having a hard time...

Yes, Shikamaru is a jounin...just looking at what he wears...I guess. *although Naruto Wikia states that he's still a Chuunin...ehhh...I think he's most likely a jounin.* Well, seeing that he was the first one to become a Chuunin from the Konoha Twelve in a very fast time, there's no doubt that he's a jounin, IMO.
And Neji's skill, Kaiten, I see that, wind (plus chakra...) is infused with it, somehow.
Also, you can't have missed the NaruHina streak in the latest chapter. Hinata's never shown any interest in anyone but Naruto, and she isn't shown in anyone's company besides Shino and Kiba (Kiba more- in fact, I don't mind KibaHina).
Oh, the chapter wherein Hinata tries to help Naruto but can't? She'd only be a burden to him if she were to assist him (and those words came out from the mouth of a Branch Member no less). What if she gets injured? Naruto wouldn't have any time to fuss over her. If Kiba and the others come to her aid, they'd be involved as well. If Naruto left them injured fighting with Pein, he'd probably look like a jerk.
Her screentime with Neji is nil. It's not hinted, it's not mentioned, it's just not there.
I believe in Screentime =/= Development. Most of the time Kurenai and Asuma are seen together, right, but they rarely get panels or scenes showing only them. How could they be very very canon if there are very few panels showing them together?

And...hate? Then why does Neji spar with Hiashi? Why is he wearing Hyuuga-like robes? He already forgave the clan. He never hated Hinata. His blind rage for the Main Branch took the best of him, and since Hinata represents the Main Branch, he may have took out his hatred to the Main Branch with her. Past is past, I do believe.
And Neji gave a smile to Hinata. Although it was more of an encouraging smile, it was one of the smiles he rarely gives to everyone. It showed how he was aware of her feelings. He cares for her well-being now. Did Neji ever give Tenten a smile?

Really? I've never even seen Sakura having a straight talk with Neji, or to any other guys other than Naruto, Sasuke, Lee, Sai, Yamato, Shikamaru and Kakashi. If Hinata couldn't get into a conversation with him, what more if it's Sakura? A person that Neji doesn't give a total care about? I say NejiHina is much more plausible than NejiSaku. NejiSaku is most likely a pairing formed because the fans like both of them the best, IMO.

Hinata is the Moon, beautiful and serene. If she were to be beside the Sun (Naruto), the Sun's extreme and intense rays will make the Moon look invisible and shine-less. Nope, not a good thing to do if Hinata wants to be acknowledged by everyone as the Hyuuga heiress who worked hard, not the girl who married the Hokage due to undying childhood crush.

Kishi portrayed Hinata and Neji in the Yin Yang because they REPRESENT opposites- the Cadet Hyuuga genius who can't spread his wings, and the untalented Main Branch Hyuuga who could fly if she wanted to, but keeps her wings closed. They wouldn't fit together at all, because Hinata is shy and reserved, and Neji is stoic and reserved, and neither of them can pull anything out of the other.
About screentime, sure, some couples have little of it (AsumaKurenai) but they do share what little screentime they get. NejiTen is like that. Yugao was just thrown in to make Hayate's death more tragic: and she was only shown that one time, of course she doesn't share panels with Hayate.
And yes, Lee and Gai are always there too, because they're Team Gai. But Gai and Lee, as student/teacher (almost father/son) share panels, because they're closer to each other than they are to anyone else, and the same goes for Neji and Tenten.
You said it, Clans are ruled by wife and husband. The Cadet Branch members aren't allowed to lead the Clan- imagine a Cadet Hyuuga, with a seal on their forehead, trying to give anyone orders. What's more, their blood is reputed "less pure" than the Main Branch's: this is because the Main Branch members breed carefully to keep the Byakugan as powerful as possible, while the Cadet Hyuugas can do what they like, and quite likely marry anyone they wish: this is evidenced by the different colored hair in many Cadet Hyuugas shown in the manga. Neji has no place at Hinata's side: and thank goodness for that, their kids would be, if not deformed, genetically diseased, or born with Down syndrome, probably sterile, because incest is wrong, Nature knows it's wrong, and makes sure to prevent further reproduction of genetically weak individuals.
Of course Neji's not encouraging Tenten to run to Lee or anyone else. Why would he? That would be crazy, sending off his girl to someone else. <3
What goes for one couple doesn't necessarily have to go for another. Just because Kishi created Tenten as Neji's sparring mate/love interest, thus giving her a name linked to Neji's feelings, doesn't mean every couple has to go the same way.
Yeah, Team Gai doesn't know the other teams have separated, but that doesn't change the fact that they WON'T split up. Neji won't run to Hinata- he'll stay with Tenten. If they do go to the Hyuuga, they'll go together. Hinata already has Kou to protect her (now that's a cute couple!).

Some don't care about the pairing, others despise it, but there ain't no positive outlook on it wherever I look, and rightly so. There's very little to go by it anyway, as I said: not by chance, there are very few anime screenshots of Neji and Hinata available,and no panels in the manga (not counting those when he's beating her to death, obviously ^^), because quite simply the couple's never hinted to. The relationship shown at first is pure hate- and yes, he did hate her before, her as a person, because in the manga it shows Kiba telling Hinata that she's to be careful, because "Neji is cruel to you." That KIBA, who's not part of the Hyuuga, should have noticed, and know this, shows how nasty Neji must have been to Hinata, even in public. After his reconcilement with the Main family, he trains with Hiashi, who after all can teach him many things- but his relationship with Hinata is never, ever expanded upon. It would have been easy to show them together, given Neji's forgiveness of the Main branch: but no, they exchange one sentence, about Hinata's love interest too, and that's it. It is the last (technically first too, since it's the only time he wasn't trying to kill her) time they're seen together. There's nothing to go by NejiHina, as you can see. Kishi doesn't bother showing them together after that, because there's nothing to show. He does however show Hinata fainting in front of Naruto, and thinking of risking her life to go to him. Also, as extra info, in the first drawing Kishi ever made of Hinata he put Naruto in the background. Smells like NaruHina to me.

About Shikamaru, I'm going to have to say he's a Chuunin. Chuunin wear that vest too, and it would have been mentioned if he'd been made Jounin. As for Neji's Elemental type jutsu, I can't say it's wind, because wind's not needed to use the Gentle Fist techniques. I suspect, but we're going to have to wait and see, that the YinYang type jutsu Kakashi and Yamato once mentioned probably apply to the Hyuuga techniques. Who knows?

Yes, they're both opposites, but they're both very similar at the same time. The yin and the yang fit perfectly for each other and each other only, one can benefit the other. Neji can quietly strengthen Hinata, and Hinata will bring out more human emotions from the stoic Hyuuga people.

Hinata addresses Neji so because she holds him with great respect. It shows how dear Neji is to her. It doesn't mean you call someone "nii-san" that you are already siblings.
Technically, they're half-siblings. But Kishi announced they're cousins, didn't he? I'm still confused on whether Hiashi and Hizashi are identical or not, since I haven't read much of the databook and the manga never even mentioned about them being identical. That's like saying "The Hyuuga Clan is wrong", because their clan is full of "incest". They all have the Byakugan, almost all of them have brown hair. You don't see a blonde Hyuuga running around. Inbreeding is what makes the Clans pure. So practically speaking, incest is ever-present in the clans now (i.e. great resemblance between the Inuzuka members and between the Aburame members). Sasuke and Itachi's parents were first cousins. =/
The Hyuuga aren't really a separate family, they're merely a family with two branches.
The Hyuuga are so overprotective of their secret. If Hinata were to need a successor, who would father her child, who should most likely receive the Byakugan in an early age? No other teenage / younger Hyuuga members are there, and if there were, and they were skilled, then they should have been acknowledged as well. Hanabi is neither a boy, nor the firstborn, as you can see. Since Hinata received the Byakugan at most likely a later age, Hyuuga Neji, the prodigy, whose Hyuuga blood flows the strongest, who received the Byakugan at a very early age, will be most likely to be chosen to father her child, since it will be assured that their child may have a very very high chance on receiving the Byakugan.
And they seemingly have no choice either. Hiashi, the Head of the Hyuuga Clan, is training with Neji (but, I'm not saying that Hiashi will make them marry, he still has that rough attitude somehow. Old habits die hard.). I see that the traditions are starting to crumble, and it all started when Hinata was born.

Hmmm...there were five panels that showed both of them (bloodless, I might add.) The first three: Chapter 102 page 9 , where the oh-so cherished-NejiHina-scene is seen, where the young Neji says that little Hinata is cute. ^o^ (Of course, you might say that he was four when he said that, but hey, why'd he bother remembering that he said such words to her when he supposedly despised her? : 3)...maybe that scene portrayed that if not for his blind rage for the Main Branch, he may have developed more feelings for her.
In the eyes of a NejiHina fan, seeing that scene and for Neji to remember that when he supposedly hated her, it could signal to them that he threw his newly-developed feelings for Hinata away. The last two, The same chapter page 11, where he observes and watches Hinata with very happy and determined eyes, and you see him not hesitating to protect her. It was a bad-timing, in our case, for Neji to start liking Hinata, and Hizashi's brain gets mushed in front of him. His feelings for Hinata was suddenly broken off.
And there's another panel showing both of them in Chapter 238 also. Neji called for her attention about Naruto. And two more panels showing him looking at her with happy and gentle eyes. Lo and behold, Neji was smiling his own genuine smile at her.

*got it back* I doubt that Neji and Tenten would like to be in the same footsteps Lee is in. They simply have...no choice? ._. They only band together for their disapproval of Lee and Gai. Not because they somehow like each other. I admit that I can see Tenten likes Neji for his strength and such, but seeing her give a fangirl-ish look at Lee... (the same chapter wherein Neji talks to Hinata about seeing Naruto one last time) that smirk, sill doesn't change the fact that she feels something towards Lee you don't see her looking at Neji like that.
Yes, she looked at Neji once with a smile on her face, but it was in a filler episode. Tenten looked at him with a blush and a giggle in the anime, a happy and a smile of realization in the manga. I can see in her eyes that she's realized that Lee is a very good and hardworking guy. ^o^

And if ever Neji becomes overcomed by his painful past once more, how will she comfort him? She didn't get to understand his past which lead him to his hatred for the Main Branch. She doesn't understand Neji's loneliness.
And, Hinata can comfort Neji, seeing the scene where before Neji was planning to land his final hit on Hinata, Hinata has sensed what Neji felt, and Neji angrily responded: meaning, Hinata can move Neji, somehow, because they share the same pain of being shunned by their own people. Neji, the prodigy, ignored by his clan, Hinata, the weak heiress, being thought of as useless. They were both alone.
Of course Neji would save Tenten's life. Lee caught Tenten in the Chuunin Exams, he talked back to Temari and even attempted to attack her for the things she said about Tenten. Lee can relate to Tenten, because despite being very hardworking, they weren't acknowledged. They were despised for being seen as weak.
And, I do agree that they are both in the same page when it comes to Lee and Gai, and that's only the limit. They unite, because they disagree with Lee and Gai and their system. That's simply it.

Oh, and for a Branch member to call her a burden, and she knew she was if she were to interfere, I, as a Hinata paramour, seek for what's best for Hinata. Naruto is her main weakness. She may get her strength from him, but she'll only look inferior when she and Naruto ever get together. She'd remain weak, she'd follow whatever he likes, Naruto will never learn how to be proper for a little while. Hinata will never learn to be independent with Naruto inspiring and leading people.
And yes, his relationship with Hinata has extended greatly. From "hating" her, to give her a nice encouragement and looking out for her well-being in a short time, his relationship with the Main Branch improved. And seeing him wearing more traditional robes similar to the Hyuuga, it's no denying that somehow, he's forgiven the Main Branch and he considers them important enough for him to acknowledge them as his family. Neji would be such a jerk if he turned away from his own family just be be together with his team.

About Shikamaru, I'm going to have to say he's a Chuunin. Chuunin wear that vest too, and it would have been mentioned if he'd been made Jounin. As for Neji's Elemental type jutsu, I can't say it's wind, because wind's not needed to use the Gentle Fist techniques. I suspect, but we're going to have to wait and see, that the YinYang type jutsu Kakashi and Yamato once mentioned probably apply to the Hyuuga techniques. Who knows?
I didn't mean the vest. His pants, his shirt, it's just like what Iruka, Kakashi, Kotetsu, Izumo, Ebisu, etc. wear. I've never seen a chuunin wear something of what Jounins would wear...=/
Well, the Hyuuga IS Taijutsu, but water/wind somehow can hone and become a useful element in their jutsus as well. 8D

Kishi portrayed Hinata and Neji in the Yin Yang because they REPRESENT opposites- the Cadet Hyuuga genius who can't spread his wings, and the untalented Main Branch Hyuuga who could fly if she wanted to, but keeps her wings closed. They wouldn't fit together at all, because Hinata is shy and reserved, and Neji is stoic and reserved, and neither of them can pull anything out of the other.
Yes, they're both opposites, but they're both very similar at the same time. The yin and the yang fit perfectly for each other and each other only, one can benefit the other. Neji can quietly strengthen Hinata, and Hinata will bring out more human emotions from the stoic Hyuuga people.
About screentime, sure, some couples have little of it (AsumaKurenai) but they do share what little screentime they get. NejiTen is like that. Yugao was just thrown in to make Hayate's death more tragic: and she was only shown that one time, of course she doesn't share panels with Hayate.
And yes, Lee and Gai are always there too, because they're Team Gai. But Gai and Lee, as student/teacher (almost father/son) share panels, because they're closer to each other than they are to anyone else, and the same goes for Neji and Tenten.

Neji doesn't always have to spend his time with Team Gai. Since he does spar with Hiashi sometimes...Hinata can observe them (never mind that she makes food for them, Hiashi asks her to watch, so yeah.) Neji and Tenten spend time with each other because they are teammates. Shikamaru and Ino are also teammates (so, yay they spend more time with each other!), but I see more development in ShikaTema...
When a mangaka wants to hint to pairings, he makes sure to show the characters together.
Hnnn...Remember Hayate? Why is Hayate x Yugao a canon pairing? I recall, that there wasn't any panel sowing if they were together. (At least, that's what I see.) Even though he is unimportant, canon is canon. It's not always the case wherein they show two characters together, that it means there's something going on between them.
About NejiTen panel time, it could actually be a big factor. Just think AsumaKurenai. There was no real confirmation that they were together in the first part, but they were always SEEN together. And in Shippuden, Kurenai's pregnant.
Yes, Neji and Tenten were always seen together. Along with Lee and Gai. Since you do say that they are very close as a team and as family. n.n
Quality above quantity? But the only quality in the single non-violent scene where Neji and Hinata appear shows him encouraging him to run to another man.
So Neji wants Hinata to practically run off with Naruto, who will become his greatest failure in his life? Naruto inspires, he doesn't do the changing (Oh, never mind that he said that he will "change the Hyuuga". He promised that to Neji, so, he can go get married to him instead...).
Neji became a jounin, Tsunade was a very aspiring Hokage, Sakura's on her way on surpassing Tsunade, Gaara became Kazekage...if Hinata was to marry Naruto, clans are ruled by the man/husband, it may not be the Hyuuga clan they know anymore. The Hyuuga reputation is dead. Hinata would be the worst leader for bringing them down to nothingness just because of "love". Marriage doesn't need love to be done, in fact, it was mostly done in the past to preserve family matters to themselves. Endogamy, that's what it is. 8D
I think Neji encouraged Hinata to see Naruto because he can observe that she's strong with him (well, not seeing him in years will sadden her, so Neji stops and encourages her to see him, so that she'll be happy. He's looking out for her happiness n.n. Shows how he's concerned for her and her feelings. Don't see Neji doing that to Tenten whatsoever).
And you know the damned Hyuuga elders, so batshit crazy about their bloodline limit.
If Neji ever told Tenten to run to Lee, I'd so totally go emo, because it'd pretty much be confirmation that there were no feelings there. NejiTen has quality and quantity, and the animators give it more depth, bless them.

Neji and Hinata are both represented as birds. The bird in the cage, and the bird in the sky, one of them must use their beak to break out from his cage and finally taste the freedom they ask for. Despite Hinata being free, she's still caged, and the awaiting bird in the cage will be full of determination and willpower and that can lead her well. ^^-
Oh, Kurenai means crimson. Asuma means...a name.
Hayate means squall, gale, smooth, or sudden. Yugao means moonflower. o3o

Tenten holds Neji in higher regard than anyone else: the smile she gives Gai and Lee in the manga isn't admiring at all, it's cheeky. She's just happy that her team is back to the way it was before Neji's defeat/Lee's injury.
She admires Neji for his strength, and capability. I see her admiring Lee for being very hardworking. I'm happy to see that Tenten is very hardworking as well. I think they'd be compatible. They're hard workers. Although Tenten would be ignorant to a man's assistance...
The way I see her smile is that she holds admiration for him for working really hard, working really hard to defeat a prodigy like Neji.
The closeness between Team Gai members isn't common to the other teams. All the other teams atm have broken up to fight. Like I said, Team Gai certainly won't break up, simply because they are each other's family. It reamins to be seen, of course, but it's a pretty safe bet.
Team Gai had no idea the others went their separate ways. The other teams are very close as well (Kiba, Hinata, and Shino still together despite Kurenai being broken-hearted; InoShikaChou still a strong team despite of their great loss, Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi still strong-willed despite of Sasuke's betrayal...), and I don't see the other senseis leading their team to battle. Kurenai's pregnant (and I wonder if she's alright ;~; ), Asuma's dead, Kakashi's seemingly dead, Iruka and the others are having a hard time...
On a sidenote, are you sure Shika's a Jounin? I'm pretty sure Neji's the only Jounin of the Konoha Eleven. =O

Yes, Shikamaru is a jounin...just looking at what he wears...I guess. *although Naruto Wikia states that he's still a Chuunin...ehhh...I think he's most likely a jounin.* Well, seeing that he was the first one to become a Chuunin from the Konoha Twelve in a very fast time, there's no doubt that he's a jounin, IMO.
And Neji's skill, Kaiten, I see that, wind (plus chakra...) is infused with it, somehow.
Also, you can't have missed the NaruHina streak in the latest chapter. Hinata's never shown any interest in anyone but Naruto, and she isn't shown in anyone's company besides Shino and Kiba (Kiba more- in fact, I don't mind KibaHina).
Oh, the chapter wherein Hinata tries to help Naruto but can't? She'd only be a burden to him if she were to assist him (and those words came out from the mouth of a Branch Member no less). What if she gets injured? Naruto wouldn't have any time to fuss over her. If Kiba and the others come to her aid, they'd be involved as well. If Naruto left them injured fighting with Pein, he'd probably look like a jerk.
Her screentime with Neji is nil. It's not hinted, it's not mentioned, it's just not there.
I believe in Screentime =/= Development. Most of the time Kurenai and Asuma are seen together, right, but they rarely get panels or scenes showing only them. How could they be very very canon if there are very few panels showing them together?
And if it were there, it would be censored in the anime. Kishi won't be creating a pairing (out of the blue, that he's never even hinted at) that would create trouble for the animators.
It's Kishi's anime. Why would he care about the others' countries and their culture and such? The Europeans and Asians like me won't mind of NejiHina, I'm sure.
NejiHina is a crack pairing just as much as ItaSasu is. The hate is/was there, the sibling relationship is there. What else is missing?

And...hate? Then why does Neji spar with Hiashi? Why is he wearing Hyuuga-like robes? He already forgave the clan. He never hated Hinata. His blind rage for the Main Branch took the best of him, and since Hinata represents the Main Branch, he may have took out his hatred to the Main Branch with her. Past is past, I do believe.
And Neji gave a smile to Hinata. Although it was more of an encouraging smile, it was one of the smiles he rarely gives to everyone. It showed how he was aware of her feelings. He cares for her well-being now. Did Neji ever give Tenten a smile?

Really? I've never even seen Sakura having a straight talk with Neji, or to any other guys other than Naruto, Sasuke, Lee, Sai, Yamato, Shikamaru and Kakashi. If Hinata couldn't get into a conversation with him, what more if it's Sakura? A person that Neji doesn't give a total care about? I say NejiHina is much more plausible than NejiSaku. NejiSaku is most likely a pairing formed because the fans like both of them the best, IMO.
They're not even compatible personality-wise.
And why did Kishi portray both of them in a yin yang? So different, but so similar. Two pieces of the puzzle that would fit together. ^___^
Hinata is the Moon, beautiful and serene. If she were to be beside the Sun (Naruto), the Sun's extreme and intense rays will make the Moon look invisible and shine-less. Nope, not a good thing to do if Hinata wants to be acknowledged by everyone as the Hyuuga heiress who worked hard, not the girl who married the Hokage due to undying childhood crush.
