Why must I always have an exploding planet....*shrugs*
Now I could never get the exploding moon to quite fit properly, the best placements for it always seemed to make it look like it was crashing into the main planet. Which was not what I wanted, and If it for somereason still looks that way, please tell me. But even if it doesnt, please help me with any tips on how to give this picture better depth. I'm Having a hard time trying to figure out where and how to position objects so that they appear a certain distance from one another, so any suggestions/critiques on this matter would be much appreciated.

Hi. Like the art. I was searching for planet ideas when I saw yours. I love it. You might want to enter it in an art competition, like the one I am trying to win. The contest information is found here
[link]
Basically they give out $100 a week till June 29th, then they pick a $5,000 suite winner, which they give away a whole bunch of software.
You can submit art here:

Note: I think you have to create an account, but thats free, so who cares.

I think making the moon larger - placing it "closer" to the camera - would give more of an impression that it was distant from the planet.

Hey, wanted to know if i could use this picture for a players handbook for a sci-fi RPG i'm creating, sort of like D&D.
I have no intention of selling it, but just wanted to use nice artwork of planets and creatures that would be encountered in the game. The RPG is based on a book I'm writing.
Let me know if it's cool. Just didn't want to use your art without your permission.

I've dabbled in making planets, and I must say the main planet it stunning.
That being said, how the hell did you get the shadows for the clouds??? Contact me anyway you'd like, but I really want to know how to get that effect, its amazing.
As for the exploding planet, I think if you move it to the right (away from the planet) a bit, it could help...basically take the non-exploding edge of the planet and nearly line it up with the atmosphere of the main planet.
Also, the stars do seem a bit manufactured or "man-made" if you will. Mainly just the stars with the green aura/dust around them.
Anyway, that's my two cents, very well done overall though, esp the main planet with the clouds, like I said, but also the city lighting looks very natural and real. Props!

As far as the clouds go I have the original layer from a cloud texture I made which is white pixels on a black BG. This layer was then set to screen in photoshop and then I applied the spherical filter to it. To get the shadows is amazingly easy at this point, all you have to do duplicate the layer, invert it and set it to multiply then move it over a little bit and set the layer under the original cloud layer. After that you may want to do a little blurring or messing with the opacity, but otherwiae that should cover it.

Soo cool...Ok one more question. I can't seem to figure out how to do the city lights properly...any tips? Cause yours are very nicely done...like really obvious but still cool at the same time

Um, I think I did something along the lines of selecting all the highlights, and then accentuating the ones around the coasts manually...but I can't remember too well.

With all this talk of light-sources, can I just say:
turning the exploding moon into an orange light source for the dark side of the planet was an AMAZING idea.
Nice one.

Obviously, you're really great at this. I've been practicing in photoshop with planets for two weeks now and I still can't get them to look as great as yours.
It's extremely detailed so 110 layers sounds about right. I really like the fact that every part of the image was carefully created. I also like the fact that there's a lot going on. You've got the two planets or planet & moon, the exploding moon, the star field and then the large planet. The distance between them looks about right, too.
I could honestly say there's nothing you couldn't do with planets. Nice work.
As for the actual placement of the moon... it looks fine. Try adding an atmosphere on the part that isn't exploding or an outer glow of some type. It may or may not help. Someone mentioned that you should add shadow. I don't think they were looking at the light source correctly. If you add shadow it's going to look like there are two different light sources, which isn't the case. I think the glow is perfect though. It's faint so it gives us the impression that the moon is actually farther away rather than colliding into the planet. The brighter the glow the closer the moon is. So like I said before, it looks fine. I think you're just overanalyzing it.

It lokks kind of like a meteor, hurtling towards the main planet. Maybe you could turn the explosion to the top of the screen?
Nonetheless, an amazing piece of art, I will fave.

by no means am i an expert but perhaps making the exploding moon closer to the viewer and maybe have it exploding from to sides from the top and bottom slightly off center.. that might through the illusion of it crashing into the planet..
but seriously excellent job..
