Author's Note: The following Story is a first person Wanda MAximoff x MaleAgent!Reader fan ficThe world was going to hell and a hand basket, at least according to your grandmother. As a young boy I remember hearing her say that whenever she would babysit. I would be sitting on the floor with my legs crossed, using the coffee table as a table. Grammy would be sitting in dad’s armchair using a TV Dinner Stand. It was the only time I was allowed not only to eat in the living room but also watch TV while eating. Even if the only thing we would watch was the evening news.
Whenever they would say ‘after these messages’ after a particular bad news story, the older woman would shake her head and say, “See that there -First Name-? That there is the world going to hell and a hand basket.” Grammy would just shake her head and take a bit out of whatever my mom had left us for dinner.
That is until one night, not to long after my tenth birthday. My folks were out at another event thing for their office. Not liking the left over meat loaf, mom had left for us, Grammy had ordered pizza. As we waited for it to arrive we took our usually places while she turned on the news. According to the news broadcaster there had been breaking news involving Stark Industries. They had been in the news a lot lately since their CEO was kidnapped by terrorists.
The news caster went on to say how there was an explosion at Stark Industries. However the big story was how once again this odd looking flying metal suite of sorts that had appeared. Tony Stark was about to do hold a press conference regarding the explosion and what people and started to refer to as the Iron Man. Since the first time the flying man appeared a lot of people thought it was Mr. Stark because it had appeared not long after he had escaped from his captors.
We watched as he appeared in front of a room full of reporters. At first he was using cards to help him remember what to say but then he just looked up, dropped the cards and four words that would change the world. “I am Iron Man.”
It was the first time that she didn’t say anything about how bad the world was getting. Instead I watched in amazement as a smile worked its way onto her wrinkled face. “Well I will be damned. Maybe now the world has a fighting chance.” And funny part was she was right.
After that night I no longer hated watching the news with her. When my parents would tell me she was looking after me for a night or so I would get excited. It meant I was going to get to see more news about the hero’s appearing everywhere. When she wasn’t babysitting I was learning all I new about a group of people starting to be referred to as the Avengers. I wanted to be one of them. I wanted to be like the men my grandmother thought would save us from hell. I wanted to be one of them.
When I started high school I throw myself into training. I joined the wrestling team, joined the martial arts club. I saved up till I got my very first dumb bells. Then I would spend every waking moment working out, making myself stronger. Pretty soon I became the strongest guy at school. By graduation I started to get noticed by certain groups, yet only one spiked my interest.
I had gone into my room and tossed my bag onto my bed when I saw a white envelope on my bad. Only thing written on it was my name and a crest stamped on the back. The crest was simple a bird, most likely an eagle, inside a circle. It wasn’t for any government law enforcement I knew of. It wasn’t for the FBI or Secret Service. When I had asked my mother about where the letter came from she didn’t know. Thought maybe dad had put it there. In the end curiosity won over and I went back to my room to open it.
To my amazement it was a letter from some agency called Shield. It went on to say how that my work and skill had come to their attention and they wanted me to meet with them to possible get job with them after school. My legs gave out causing me to fall into the sitting position on my bed. All those years growing up and watching Men in Black and Agent Cody Banks. Suddenly I was a young Frankie Muniz being asked to be a secret agent. Excitement ran through me as I read the letter over again. Praying this wasn’t just a cruel joke.
Two years had passed since that night. To my relief the letter I received that day wasn’t a prank but an offer to train as an agent for the secret government agency called Shield. They were the ones behind the Avengers and other supers like them. During my time as a new recruit I learned a lot and advanced quickly. Soon becoming one of the youngest agents in the history of Shield. Combat and arms training came as easy to me as breathing. No one could explain it except that it was just rare talent.
Not long after getting my badge as an official Agent of Shield, Hydra appeared and caused the destruction of the agency I had been working my ass off to be apart of. After I started working in the Avengers Tower as a member of Stark Industries. I had proven my loyalty to the Avengers when I stood up against five Hydra agents and was the only one left standing. This is when I finally got to meet Director Fury. He had told me that he was working on getting Shield back to the one we all knew and loved.
So for another year I worked as a combat specialist within Stark Industries. Waiting till the day I could finally be an agent again. Not expecting just what would happen on my first mission back as a part of the Avengers. It had only been a couple days since the Avengers had stopped Ultron from destroying the world that I finally became what I was truly meant to be.
Instead of rebuilding the tower for a third time, Stark decided to use an old warehouse to build their new base. Somewhere secret so it couldn’t be touched. So I was transferred back to their services which is where I got my first mission as an agent.
Apparently during their fight in Sokovia, they had met and teamed up with a set of twins with powers given to them by Loki’s staff. Sadly only the girl survived and was now training as a new member of the Avengers. My job was stay close to her and make sure that she was safe. Since she was new to the country they wanted someone to play body guard till she got her sea legs as they say.
It only took me a day to memorize the file I was given on her. Some might say that I knew more about her then she did. My best friend Jeremiah, for starters. “Come on -First Name-, you are making yourself obsessed with this girl just to prove your worth to the Director,” he tells me as we make our way to the wing that housed the Avengers.
“I am not obsessed,” I retort with a glare. “I am just doing what any agent would do. This way I won’t encounter any problems while I am watching over her.”
A knowing smirk grew on his face. “You are so full of it. We have been best buds since first day at the academy. This means that I can tell when someone has worked their way through that case you have wrapped around your heart and she hasn’t even met you yet and she has a place deep inside you. Even though I’m pretty sure you want it the other way around.” Jeremiah nudges me with his elbow adding a wink for good measure.
Heat rose to my cheeks without my permission. “You seriously need to get that brain of your cleaned. I don’t think I have ever heard you speak without saying something dirty,” I grumble hoping he didn’t notice the colour of my cheeks.
Sure the pictures that were attached to her file showed, not only showed that she was bad ass in battle, but that she was breath takingly beautiful. So maybe I had a small crush on her but I was far from obsessed. Plus it wasn’t news that she lost her brother during the battle of Sokovia so I knew she wouldn’t be in a romance mood for a while. No one could really blame her.
We came to the elevator that would take me to the floor of Wanda’s room. I pressed the button and waited for the elevator to arrive. My best friend waited with me leaning against the wall with his arms crossed in front of him. For as long as I have known him, Jeremiah was always cracking jokes and making the mood light. Do to it’s rarity, when he would become uncharacteristically serious I knew he meant business. There had only be one other time that I saw him this serious and that was when we were fighting to save Shield from Hydra.
“I just want you to be cautious. From what I’ve heard she has a few screws loose if you know what I mean,” he states his gaze burning a hole into me. “I heard a rumor that she is the only person to truly scare the great Natasha Romanoff. That shouldn’t be something you over look.”
The door to the elevator beeps signalling its arrival. According to her file Wanda possessed mind type abilities. The full extent of her power was still undetermined but from what I read she was pretty powerful. As for what she had done to Romanoff, she had simply placed her biggest fear into Black Widow’s mind. What people, like Jeremiah, forget was that she had done that while working for Ultron. Then she saw the error of her ways and helped us beat Ultron and his army. She had changed and was now an Avenger. If they thought she was a member of the team then so did I.
When the doors opened I stepped through before turning back to face him and lean against the back wall. “I will be careful. Director Fury asked me to do this personally. Clearly he thinks I’m good enough for this. Plus it really isn’t anything other babysitting duty, that’s it. See you later for drinks.” The doors close again before Jeremiah could respond.
My head falls back to rest on the cold steel wall. I was finally doing a mission that evolves the Avengers. Finally I was going to be apart of the team that made my grandma believe in the world again. Getting close with Wanda was the start of something better. I kept telling myself as the doors opened once more and I started making my way down the hallway towards the door marked Wanda M. Giving myself a moment to control my thoughts then lifted my knuckle to tap on the door.
When my knuckle was inches away from the door it freezes as long with the rest of my body. Right before knocking my ears head faint noises coming from inside. It took a couple seconds for my brain to register the sound. When it did confusion and concern wash over me as I realized that soft sobbing was coming from Wanda’s room. I had only been officially on this mission for four hours and I was already failing.
Instead of knocking, I wrap my hand around the handle and test it. Luckily it wasn’t locked and gave a cheerful click as I slowly pulled it open. The sobbing got a little louder now that the door wasn’t able to muffle the sound. It wasn’t hysterical crying like you expect or sadly not even tears of joy that ran down her face. Sitting on her bed with her knees pressed against her chest, crying softly into a pillow was the supposedly scary Wanda you had been warned about.
Due to her current state she didn’t notice the door open or that she had a visitor. Her sea blue eyes were glued to the tv that sat on the top of her dresser. Tears trickling down her cheeks as the on screen reporter talked about the battle of Sokovia. It wasn’t the normal news cast of events like most news stations had been playing, the one she was watching was a special about those who had fallen during the battle. At the current moment they were showing footage of Pietro Maximoff, her now deceases twin brother. No wonder she was crying, it had only been a week since she lose the only family she had left.
Her hair was draped over her shoulder in waves of chocolate curls. She was wearing a pair of navy sweatpants and a crimson red tank top. Her body was shaking slightly as she cried, her eyes never leaving her brother. My hearted leapt then dropped as she curled up more giving a gargled sniffed. Since she still wasn’t aware of my presence so decided to reveal myself before I caused her to have a heart attack or to give her reasons to attack me.
Standing up straight with my arms behind my back I clear my throat. Wanda gives a small start and then wipes the tears from her cheeks before looking at you. “Who are you and what are you doing in my room?” she asks, her voice cracking a little.
I keep my face neutral and stand tall, just like I learned back in the academy. Hopefully then she wouldn’t notice that her accent had causes a slight blush to creep across my cheeks. “It is nice to meet you Miss Maximoff. My name is Agent -Last Name- and I have been asked to be your handler while you make yourself at home,” I explain keeping my voice soft.
Her set of vibrant blue eyes stay on me for a moment before she looks away again. I watched as she lifted a hand up, red mist like stuff swirled around her fingers as the tv shuts off on its own. Once the screen was black her hand went back to join her other one. “I don’t need a handler. I may be young but I don’t need a babysitter.”
A smile creeps over my face as I let my stance relax. “I don’t think you need a babysitter either. However, everyone needs a friend. Why don’t we start out as that then maybe work our way up?” I offer taking a seat on her desk chair. Leaving enough distance between us that she didn’t feel pressured, that’s the last thing I needed.
She raised an eyebrow, sliding around on her bed till she sat on the edge of her bed legs now crossed in front of her. “You want to be friends with me? I thought all you American Shield agents were scared of me? Do you really think I do not notice the stares or hear the whispers or hear the thoughts of you guys as I walk the halls?” Wanda states her eyes moving away from me, anguish flashing across her face.
I watched her for a moment. It was sad, but everything she said was true. Many people thought the Avengers had lost their mind when they teamed up with the Maximoff twins. Everyone thinks she is going to lose it and take everyone out with a simple wave of her hand. As for me I am with the Avengers. Anyone they think is safe I do to. Which is why I will not screw up my mission. I don’t know why but I never wanted her to have that pained expression again.
Slowly I slid my chair an inch towards her, keeping my features caring and sympathetic, girls like that. Or so Jeremiah would tell me after spending a night out with some girl he met at the bar. I wasn’t trying to pick her up or anything I just wanted the tears to stop. Crying girls always made me a little nervous. “Not everyone does. Mr. Stark and Mr. Rogers think you will make a great member of the Avengers. So do I, that’s why I want to help you feel apart of the team.”
One last tear fell from her eyes as she gave me a doubtful glance. “You actually want to help me? Why do you care if I feel welcomed?”
It was my turn to break eye contact and moving it to the floor. No one knew about my grandma, or anything about my family. To keep them safe I never told them that I became an agent. They think I am nothing but a security guard for an office building in Washington, D.C. and in turn no one at Shield knew about them. It was the only way to make sure they weren’t used against me. But I knew telling her why I cared would help me with an in. She might start to trust me if I did.
“When I was little my grandma was my babysitter and she always forced me to watch the news. Even though every time a sad report was on, which is like ninety percent of it was, she would say how the world was going to hell and a hand basket. She didn’t think that there was any hope in saving the planet until the night Tony Stark announced that he was Iron Man. After that she started to believe again, even said that we finally had a fighting chance and she would say that during the news instead of how we were doomed. So when Shield asked me to become an agent I jumped at the chance and why I want to help you, so my grandma can still have faith in humanity.”
Every word I said was spoken to the floor, it had been so long since I had talked about my family to someone. As an agent we are taught to hide our feelings while on missions. It was the only way to stay ahead of our enemies. Unfortunately, my family had always been my weak spot. So manly I know but there were all I had and the reason I became an agent.
Because my eyes were on the floor I didn’t see that Wanda had gotten up, or that she had decided to kneel down in front of me. It wasn’t until her hand had landed on my knee. Slowly I looked up to find that I was now face to face with her. We were so close that I could see a sparkle in her eyes. Once again heat started to rise in my cheeks without my say so. It was starting to get annoying.
For the first time since meeting her, I saw a smile on the newest Avengers face. “I can tell that your grandma means a lot to you. Probably as much as Pietro meant to me,” she tells me softly. “I wish more guys thought of family the way you do.” Wanda stands up causing me to look up at her. Being friends doesn’t sound so bad better then babysitter like I’m sure Fury sent you to be. God knows I need all the friends I can have right now.”
Once she was standing I could finally breath. For some reason her being that close had caused my lungs to stop working. If Jeremiah was here I would never hear the end of it. I needed to focus on the mission, Fury didn’t just want me to be her handler. If she ever found out what I was really here for she would flip and never forgive me, which was something I was never going to let happen. I wasn’t going to let her find out.
“Then as Woody would say to Buzz, you got a friend in me,” I say flashing my own smile pushing my fears aside.
Her head tilts slightly in confusion. “Buzz and Woody? Are they agents of shield?” she asked taking a seat back on her bed.
It was my turn to show confusion as I raised my eyebrow. “Wait are you serious? You don’t know who Buzz and Woody are?” She gave me a single shake of her head to confirm what I had said. “Wow then I have a lot to show you! We will start out small and work our way up.”
Spinning in the chair I turn on her computer and start typing. “I hope you don’t have anything planned for the next couple days because Agent -First Name-‘s class in American Cinema is about to begin!”
Wanda gets up again and comes over to stand behind me. She crosses her arms across the top of my head and leans her chin on them. “I bet being friends with the professor will help me get an A! What do you think?”
Thanks to the shine on the computer screen I saw that all the tears in her eyes had tried up and now a happy smile had replaced them. My heart picked up speed as a pair of butterflies decided to start dancing along side it’s beat. If you had anything to do with it that smile would never again fall from her beautiful face.
My own smile grew as I continued to make a list of movies we were going to watch. “We will just have to wait and see.”
