It's a short story. It focuses on Bertha Young, who is a happy soul but quite naive about the world she lives in. She has a loving husband, and she is mysteriously drawn to another woman (Miss Fulton).
At the end, she finds out that her husband and Miss Fulton has a love affair.
In the story, there's this pear tree - that's why I was reminded of the prose.
