Description
Originally this was done for the weekly feature at Dazahlics "Burning Fires" but I ended up getting completely distracted by real life (making backdrops for my daughters musical at school, getting sick, her getting sick, etc) so it's just getting done now. I wanted to render the fire rather than add it afterward because I had never done that. So I used a matte transparent plane with several lights behind it to create the fire.Daz 4.6, MD2, Reality, Lux, PS The carpet and the girl's cover up were made in MD2. A lot of the furniture came from the freestuff section of Renderosity. The character is Elita which I got from their Facebook promotion - thank you! Textures from cgtextures.com

I used a bump map that I made from a regular carpet too but this far away it's not as visible. I will have to do one close up. It's my favorite part of the picture ha ha!

to me she looks a bit nervous..like it is her first time or first time in that relationship so she is a little scared.
i imagine many a bride looked like that on theri wedding night. that is what i thought of in fact when i saw it.

She was supposed to have a better smile, but I think it's ok like this. I love leaving things so that people can read into it what they want to. My daughter (who is only 9) says she looks like a vampire trying to lure a victim. I had to laugh at that one. I asked what she was luring the victim with and she said the wine. I'm glad that's all she thought of.

One other small critic? If you ever go back to re-do this, I'd give her face a little more expression. It's almost mannikin-like at this point and you are so close to having this right. Great effort otherwise.

Thanks, I realized just now that I had probably added too much smoothing to the mesh and so all the work I did on the expression was smoothed out. I just have not used this version of Daz enough but I bet I will remember to smooth the mesh BEFORE I do the expression or check if after ha ha!!

That's okay. I'm a Poser user myself- came in with Poser 5 and now I've just bought and installed Poser Pro 2014. In some ways with each version, it's like starting over. But you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Turn the 'fire' plane into a mesh light. Then turn it down. It will actually give a very realistic glow.

Elle-Arden In reply to capn-gary [2013-06-02 15:00:34 +0000 UTC]
I did a quick test of it at a small size and I liked the glow, but the room was overall a lot darker because the fire plane gave out less light than my other set up and so the rest of the lighting would need to be totally re done, plus it only lit up the fire in the back, not the fire in front of the log, in fact it was gone. So I don't know why that happened but at least I have some things to play with if I ever do another fireplace scene. Actually I do want to use my rug again and I had another fireplace scene in mind awhile ago. But I need a new fireplace also because I didn't like the way this one came out anyway - the stone texture was too low res so I have to re texture it or get a new one.

A little tip...give your character an expression and have her look at the camera...

Elle-Arden In reply to capn-gary [2013-06-02 17:53:26 +0000 UTC]
I already covered this with someone else ha ha but she HAD an expression and it got smoothed out by the mesh smoother and I just didn't catch it til it was all done. I wanted her looking off camera for this one to give the impression that she was looking at someone, but usually I do make them look into the camera.

Yeah, it gets rid of the jagged edges on the elbows and stuff like that. Actually I really like it, but you have to be careful not to turn it up too much and you should have it on BEFORE you do the expression. I was able to do the expression just fine on the render I did after this one, but I had the smoother on first. It's a matter of getting used to it I think. I can't stand all the jagged edges in the mesh when I have a high contrast lighting situation so the smoother is great! Also, you can increase the subdivision and there are a lot of other new gadgets too. I also smoothed out a horse so much that he had no eyelids lol!! But it will help me those too because the mesh on the horse is a total mess.

I am totally agonizing over the idea of buying the latest Poser Pro--I can 'trade in' Poser 7, and the price is just over 200 bucks...
I've been chatting with a couple of people who have the Reality 3 for Poser, and they seem to indicate that Poser 3 has all of the same kinks and glitches as Poser 2.2, but for the most part, I know how to work around all of them.
I'm just afraid of making the change, I guess. But the idea of being able to use the weight mapped characters, dynamic cloth, etc., is soooooo tempting.

I really have a hard time doing anything with Poser. I know that Suzi and Rachel both love it but I've decided to stick with Daz and see what I can learn about the new stuff. They have added everything you can do with Poser I think, it's just a matter of knowing how AND I have my hair plug in. And since I have MD2 with the mesh smoothing capabilities with Daz, I don't need dynamic cloth and I don't need to mess with Hex. I'm pretty happy with my workflow finally. Now just to figure how all the ins and outs before they change the program on me again.

Did you figure out some way of making the interface 'look' more familiar? And what about the runtime folders??? The last time I tried DS4, I had one folder with every damned thing piled in it, and seemingly no way to sort it out into usable folders.
Maybe I'm missing something basic, but it doesn't take that long to sort out things from the 'unassigned' folder to the various places they need to go in DS3. I could never figure out how to make DS4 cooperate.

I never really tried to make it look recognizable but it wasn't too hard to actually get used to it the way it was when I buckled down to it. I might still re-arrange a few things now that I know my way around a bit because some things are just dumb. The crazy thing about the content is that if you are in the first tab which is loading or whatever - surfaces?? Then your content doesn't show up. But if you are in the pose/animate tab then it's all there. Go figure. And I have no trouble at all if I use the Poser content directory - that's where all your content that's from Rendo or similar would be. Every once in awhile I have to use the Daz version if it's something I let Daz install, but that isn't very much because I like most of my stuff on my external. It's a pain, I'm not going to lie about that. I think I'm still working on trying to find a reasonable way to make my content findable. I am picking away at it.

I'm really gunshy of that Daz installer thingy. Avast Pro and Malwarebytes both dislike it intensely. (Avast thinks it's a Trojan Horse program.)
But, if you believe the propaganda, you can use your Poser runtime files with no problem. I've just been worried that I'd end up like a couple of people, and have DS4.6 wreck everything in the DS3/Poser folders.
I dunno... Maybe I'll buy yet another hard drive and dedicate it strictly to DS4.6... (Or does DS4.6 take it upon itself to go looking at every hard drive without being told to???)

You can tell it to look or not to look and where to look etc. I haven't had any problems with my poser runtime stuff at all. Avast hates the Daz installer here too!
I don't think DS wrecks it, I think what happens is people are in the wrong tab and the stuff looks like it's missing. That's what happened to me anyway. It's counter intuitive though the way they have that set up. To me at least!

Well, Puntomaus claims to have a way of making the whole interface look like DS3... and since she's a beta tester for both Daz and Poser, I suppose she's probably really got it figured out.
Maybe next month when my budget can stand it, I'll buy another drive and install 4.6 on its own drive, and I'll just install the rock-basic stuff there and try and figure it out.
This month is registration for the car, trailer, and insurance, and I spent a bit over at R'osity last weekend--so my budget is shot to hell already. LOL...

Yeah, I heard you could do that, but I didn't bother with it. I just wanted to see if I could even make it work. When I saw all the fun new tools I decided it was pretty well worth learning how to make it work and I haven't opened up DS3 since. I am going to take it off my computer completely as soon as I'm sure I can totally remake that scene for the book cover (the elf archer) in DS4, I already saved the character pose and morph but I want to make sure I don't need anything else in there. Ha ha the guy wants bigger boobs though of course!
