Yeah, it is. Sometimes white background with an added texture and some sepia maybe can be better then a gradient. Also try to position the picture accordingly, Perturabo is somehow way to the right while the left is empty. Putting the hammer on the ground in front of him would make him much more sinister and would fill out the piece nicely.
Reference for the poll-size of the hammer... or its handle, is that the marine can't wrap his hand around it. That's what gives it the powerful look. Thickness.
Also pay attention to his right leg (our left) its a bit off the ground.
Neat trick to see your errors is to flip the image horizontally, that way you will for yourself see the tiny errors you made.
