Description
"Waiting for the Time" 2007Pencil on paper, 18.5x24cm
Higher resolution image is downloadable.
This image is from my little personal experience on the old people and mostly from an inspiration from "L’Étranger" by A. Camus.
In the novel, there's a main character's mother's funeral scene in a nursing house. While the main character, Meursault, doesn't show any emotion at his own mother's funeral (and it insists his unfortunate at the last), however, the other members from the nursing house who were Meursault's mother's friends show various emotions, such as weeping, crying and sighs. After the moment, Meursault and his mother's old friends fall asleep on their chair and pass a night together. Meursault's cool narration tells since he couldn't hear the olds' voice well, he couldn't believe it was real experience. He also says he had a "silly" feeling that he was judged by them, and this feeling suggesting his end.
However, drawing this piece, I enjoyed thinking about age and death and un-describable expressions.
I would like to thank ~MiRcorvo [link] for leading me to Camus (not "L'Etranger" though). His drawings and animations are simply outstanding, so please visit his dA gallery. You must feel you are completely lost in his world.

Interesting piece. They look so tired and the expressions on their faces show how hard their life was and they seem like they don’t want to live any longer…just waiting for the time for their death. Seems like that is exactly what the title ”Waiting for the Time” is indicating. It reminds me of the old people I saw in Varanasi, India who were as if they were waiting for their own death near the river Ganga. Because Hindus believe that bathing in the river Ganga will cleanse their sins and that dying in the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi) circumvents rebirth.
I think this is a strong piece since it makes viewer to think. Great work!

Thank you for your kind comment, Kuniko.
It is very interesting for me that people gain ages in their own ways and how it appears in their last life. Some become very religious just like the story of Hindus you showed me while others simply afraid of upcoming death. Some return to when they were children while others get their situation very well and thanking for their long life.
I'm planning to redo this picture as a big tableau after fixing its propotion so the observer could consider more with almost life-sized figures

You’re welcome
That’s good idea. The size makes a big difference, so it would be even more powerful and will surely impart a greater impact to the viewer.
Good luck!

This is amazing work full of wonderfull details and in speaks of the story. I always love how the age changes faces of people and each speaks of life of their own. This reminds me of old ladies back home dressed head to toe in black sitting on benches and old men gathering together for their reminiscuing session. I think old age is very special time, almost as second childhood and I am hoping I do get a chance to experience it one day.

Thank you for your comment and .
It is amazing that you had a similar experience in your life. I agree with your thought about aging, but with the thought, I'm considering I don't want to live too long to get lost myself completely.

But when we lose our memories such as our family, friends and places, how people can actually "live"? The medical technology grow too far from what people supposed to be, I guess...
