Description
More Silmarillion and LotR sketches today! All drawn and scanned about two months ago, but somehow I only got around to compiling them today.Clockwise, starting from the top left; a hobbit who teaches the privileged (as in they get to learn how to read and write, something rather rare in the Shire) young hobbits of Tookland and whose name is Heather Boffin, Luthien Tinuviel amidst some hemlock, Maedhros after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (for the uninitiated, yes, he has a hand missing), a depressed Turin Turambar with unusually long hair, and finally, Gilraen with baby Aragorn/Estel.

I love the one of the hobbit lady in the pretty field! Now I'm imagining her meeting my hobbit Aster... Aster is lower-middle-class, though, so I doubt she would be on the "privileged" tier, though not outright poverty-level. Maybe she'd peek in once or twice to hear a lesson or two though?
Anyways, great little sketches as always!

Thank you! I can definitely see them meeting now! She teaches in Tookland, which is south of Hobbiton, but Hobbiton is her native home. I see her as giving out some free lessons in Hobbiton during spring plowing and fall harvesting, which is when most everyone is busy and she returns for a spell to Hobbiton to visit family. Aster could visit her home then for a lesson!
(This is getting very interesting, too, with exploring hobbit society and teaching. Not much emphasis is placed on "reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic" in the Shire as a rule, but I fancy she is such a good teacher (as in gets along well with the children) that some of the hobbit children of Hobbiton come along to try it out. The hobbit children of Tookland, however, are more or less forced into it, as I see the Tooks (being a rich family) placing a great deal of emphasis on education. Perhaps they aren't learning Sindarin, but they'll be learning basic math, the alphabet, reading, skills such as weaving and sewing, and perhaps going on outdoor adventures occasionally. Maybe even some music? )

Aww, I love all your ideas there! Yes, I doubt hobbits would learn Sindarin, but they have books and love poems and songs, so surely some of them can read and write their own language. Haha, poor little Tooks, not wanting to go to school... I can see Pippin throwing tantrums about it, definitely!
I'm sure Aster would love to meet your character! Do you have a name for her? I don't think I've ever done a roleplay with you before (a lot of my friends here like to do those), but if you ever enjoy them, that would be a cute start for one, I think.

Pippin would be constantly escaping to the woods to play, too!
I finally decided that her name is... *drumroll* Heather Boffin of Hobbiton! Her aunt on her mother's side (with whom she is very close), Roslyn Proudfoot, married a Took, so that's how she got the job of teaching. I've never tried roleplaying with others before, but there's a first time for everything! How to start, though?

Heather Boffin, I like that! That's a very nice hobbit-y name.
Well, here on DA, the two ways I've done roleplays are either just back and forth in comments like this, or in notes. Either way, the idea is just to write the words and actions of the character(s) you pick while the other person does the same with the other character(s). So basically, you're writing a spontaneous/unplanned mini-story with another person, and "acting" through your chosen character(s) at the same time. Some people do it in "novel" form, like this:
Aster peeked into the study room, where Heather was waiting. "Miss Heather?" she asked timidly; "can I hear a lesson today?"
Or in "script" form, like this:
Aster: *peeks into the study room timidly* Miss Heather? Can I hear a lesson today?
I usually prefer the script form, but I can do either one. There's no pressure or anything, but if you'd ever like to try, we can start one in this comment chain right here, or in a comment on your or my front page, or in a private note, whichever you'd prefer.

Apologies for taking so long...
Thanks very much for all this information! Judging from the horrendous amount of time it took me to reply, I don't think I'll be able to start roleplaying right now (I've been very busy lately) but it sounds like a lot of fun, so maybe I'll be able to try doing so later. Thanks again!
