Description
(2005) 9"x12" Pencil on PaperWell, seems like there's only one publicity photo of our favorite wizard so far, that has made the rounds, everything else is rather blurry screencaps...
This one had me stumped for a while as the lighting of the whole piece was absolutely mean. Harsh spotlight from above his right temple, another below his left jaw. So you get this very pronounced shadow of his nose over his eye and a general shaded zone running diagonally across his face. I really didn't think it could be done in pencil until I tried it, and even then I was fully prepared to toss the drawing half-way through. Instead he turned out to be gorgeous as ever with a lovely demonic streak due to the crazy stage-lighting.
Anyway, nice study in hair, skin and fur, and of course how cool is it that his two snakey-pins are actually an interlocking cloak clasp!

Thanks very much! And yeah, I'm a really BIG fan of Lucius - not so much in the books, where I really like Snape, but since Jason Isaacs has been playing him... Yummy!

WOW. Gosh, that is bloody gorgeous!!! Oh, my, my, I'm melting all over my pals computer....
You probably won't know just how out-of-character it is, but when my brother looked at this pic, he went, "Wow! That's great technique!" And I agree.
Instant fave!

Hey Elly, that is first class. My only suggestion would be that you could have exaggerated the darks in the hair just a tad darker. But that's it. The detal and rendering is wonderful!! It sounds like that reference pic was murder! Do you grid out your illustrations like this?
Oh yeah, did you get any of that ice storm we had here?

Ellygator In reply to MTCarpenter [2005-12-11 14:18:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Actually you are the second person to take issue with the hair. I'll do some rework on it, I think breaking it up with some darker lines should take care of the odd effect.
As for drawing, I fix some reference points by usind a very rough grid, so I know I'll ultimately have the proportions right, then I start with the eyes, move as high as the eyebrows, then down the nose and finish the mouth and surrounding areas - full detail - very little work afterwards required. After that I can usually tell if I captured the face or if this is a basket case. Then I work in the rest from forehead to chin. After that comes the hair and at the end the clothes.
We definitely had some of that ice storm up in Allen. As I have a sloping driveway, I only got the car out at noon on Thursday. I would have slid right down into the alley and over into the neighbor's fence...

Heh. Yeah, don't hit the neighbor's fence!
I actually started off the day with a delay until 10 am for me to go to work and and my girls to go to school. Then they closed the girls school, so I was going to take a sick day to watch them. In turn, my work was closed for the day, so it was fun staying home with the kids. We don't get many days like that, but they can be fun.

That's actually brilliant, the way things turned out. I love having a day like that and I'm glad you got to spend it with your family. I had to drag my sorry ass over to a client's site down by the Galleria around noon, though. Bleh!

Damned good...just a superb study of Lucius & the details such as the snakes you mentioned, are brilliantly realised.

(Lach!)

motehr-f***ing nice. The fur looks bloody awesome, the face expression is jiddly diddly mindblowing. and youve got the shadows just perfect. The hair-shoulder thing isnt that much of a bother really. I didnt notice it b4 I read abt it.
Frecckin' naise!

I'm in aw of you're skill for realistic pencil portraits (among other things). I like the clasp lot's! Was it in the movie?
π: 0 β©: 1
Ellygator In reply to Apothacer [2005-12-09 11:20:44 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. And yeah, he wore those clasps unclosed like brooches in Chamber of Secrets, and in the first scene he's in in GOF he's wearing them linked to keep his cloak shut. He's also wearing the white shirt.
The reference picture for the portrait is not a screencap, though, but the only high-resolution publicity photo that got published ahead of the movie. I'm not sure if it's from some deleted footage, perhaps. (Waits for DVD!)

Thanks, and you're right, let Jason loose in front of a camera and he just chomps up the scenery. You just fail to notice there are other people there as well... I loved when he acted circles around Mel Gibson in "The Patriot". (Though I do like Mel as well - from old Mad Max days...)

Ellygator In reply to sevenwillow [2005-12-09 11:37:27 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! The fur took some time. I had to keep sharpening the pencils so it would look like sleek mink, not like shaggy yak-fur...
Can you imagine lugging arround a wig, shirt, full-length coat (you can see the collar peeking out) and half a furrery sewn onto thick black wool under all those stage lights. Poor baby! And all for our wizard's beauty. Jason's such a trooper! I really think he loves his character. He talked about how he pretty much designed most of Lucius' costume - including the infamous cane - the last time round. Drove the wardrobe people nuts!

sevenwillow In reply to Ellygator [2005-12-09 15:37:16 +0000 UTC]
well when he is as good in the character then I think he is allowed to be picky about what that character should wear and the accessories to go with it. I would not expect anything less
I don't think I could have done even a 1/4 as good on that fur that you did!

Mmmmmm.....Yummy Lucius! He was so sexy in the movie..even though he wasn't in it all that much. I liked it when he was at the death eater scene and he was the only one who took off his hood. It was like he was saying "how dare you make me wear a hood and not let me show off my gorgeous hair! LOL
