Description (2005) 9"x12" Pencil on Paper

Well, seems like there's only one publicity photo of our favorite wizard so far, that has made the rounds, everything else is rather blurry screencaps...

This one had me stumped for a while as the lighting of the whole piece was absolutely mean. Harsh spotlight from above his right temple, another below his left jaw. So you get this very pronounced shadow of his nose over his eye and a general shaded zone running diagonally across his face. I really didn't think it could be done in pencil until I tried it, and even then I was fully prepared to toss the drawing half-way through. Instead he turned out to be gorgeous as ever with a lovely demonic streak due to the crazy stage-lighting.

Anyway, nice study in hair, skin and fur, and of course how cool is it that his two snakey-pins are actually an interlocking cloak clasp!

Awesome. The fur looks REALLY good! Great work with that! The only part I don't like is where his hair meets his shoulder. But I can really understand how hard that would be to get that fit in just right. Taking out that solid of his hair would be nice though. White hair wouldn't be easy to do at all

Thanks for the comment and critique. I might be able to tone down the contrast where the hair meets the shoulder a little. You are right, it looks a bit harsh and abrupt the way it's now and makes the hair look odd.

Were there any more shadoes where the hair met the fur? I'm sure there must have been some underlined shadow there.

I looked back at the reference photo. The hair looks like a pretty dense mass, so no cloak peeking out from underneath, but the whole area is more shaded as the light above the left side of his face makes his head cast a shadow there

Ya, that sounds fine, I think the part that was bothering me was that it was pretty much just white space. Some very light lines in there would probably fix it for me
