Oh wow. I LOVE the concept behind this. I can just see this as a scene in a futuristic science fiction novel. They are hoping for a miracle, they're queuing up to witness or recieve that which has been promised to them, even though they have to ascend a steep and big set of stairs. The ones waiting look bored, but they look as if they'd wait forever for their turn, because they HAVE been waiting for something like this all their desperate little lives. The size of the staircase (which appears to be removable) shows just how insignificant their lives are compared to the greatness of what they're about to see. Whatever it may be it appears to be enlightening in some way, judging by the light entering the room. It's so strong it's casting its light on the opposite wall and even providing most of the room with light. The little lightbulb on the ceiling is weak, its light barely even reaching the deserted corners of the desolate room. The size and color of the room itself are a testament to the outside world and how lacking it is.

Whew. Sorry, my imagination went on a little rant there. I love this work.

Spectacular. It seems so simple yet it really s so complex, there is so much to discover in this image and yet it allows so much for the imagine. The idea has been bought to life so well. You have used multiple light sources to somewhat guide the viewers eyes around the canvas, allowing each detail to be looked at. It feels as if this is a tapestry of many images put together, each one beautiful in its own right.

This is really captivating. You can't help but wonder what it is they're queuing up to see. It's got to be something worth mounting those steep stairs without any railings. I'll bet some people risk taking a tumble. ; ) The elongated chair that sits empty in the corner is interesting too and the cast shadow from the figure at the window is beautiful. Maybe the light sources and their accompanying shadows aren't perfect but who cares? The piece works. It has an aura of mystery about it and a surreal feel that generates a myriad of stories.

But beyond that, I do agree that the shadows match up quite well, and the lighting for that matter.

They do match up. The stairs are pulled away from the wall.
Perhaps when you try to go through the window you fall...?

I did notice the two light sources. I was talking about the shadow cast against the far left wall, created by the person standing in front of the window.

The way the person is standing in the shadow differs from how they are actually standing. Their left arm would have some light coming through between the arm and the torso. The right arm would be flexed out slightly more so you could see a clear outline of the elbow. Also the shapes of the legs in the shadow would be slightly different due to the fact that the person has a support leg and a relaxed leg.

The shadow to me looked like a person who had their right arm straight down with their left hand in a pocket and carrying their weight on both legs evenly. So to me it seemed like it could be person's shadow, just taking the shape of someone else for some hidden reason that could be left up to interpretation.

studying this piece before i read the comments, led me to respond to your comment about the shadows and lighting.

providing the light source is beaming directly into the window, perhaps the shadow on the far left wall belongs to another person on the other side of the window?

observing her stance, her shadow is set on the right side of the staircase, indicating that she is standing more to the right side.

the shadow on the far left wall is a different posture and is set to the opposite of where the woman is standing on the stairs, giving the impression it may belong to a person on the outside of the window.

interpretation spans an enormous spectrum.

Even if that was so, I would assume there would be some indication of the person's shadow who is looking through the window on the far left wall, since the artist obviously was careful to get the lighting correct.

Though I do like the idea of the shadow on the far left wall being someone that the person is looking at through the window.
