look at a piece of art, not for its accuracy, but for the concept

i think there is a bigger problem with the dimensions of the stairs and the chair [the chair being as tall as a person] but maybe that's the way the author thought of it

Actually it is precise. The shadow is being cast by a figure far away from where the light is being projected. The light is diffused and has a chance to move around the figure which would make the figure appear different in its shadow.

You are quite right about the diffusion. However, the shadow is still relatively well defined, in fact more defined the shadows of the other people. Therefore, you should still be able to see the things I mentioned, just in less obvious way.

The shadows does match up. The illustration has 2 light points. The light in the room and the light outside the window. If you trace the shadows you see they are all placed very precisely!
