„Are you sure I can handle this?“ Lisa said with a glimpse of fear, as Sophie tightened the straps of the SCBA unit on her back.

„Of course you can, you’re a big girl, aren’t you? I will also be there the entire time to watch and take care of you.“ Sophia responded, while fastening the belt buckle around Lisa’s belly.

Now that it sat secure on her back,  Lisa took a closer look at attachments dangling from the breathing apparatus. „What’s this for?“ She asked and held up the air gauge.

„This tells you how much air is left in the tank.“ Sophie explained and showed her the needle that was currently pointing at „4500psi“.

„How much time do I have until it’s empty? Will I suffocate then?“ Lisa asked nervously. She wasn’t sure about the whole thing anymore. The tank laid heavy on her back and all the hoses and fittings seemed rather complicated. If only she hadn’t asked why Sophia had that thing, this “SCBA” as she called it, laying around. But it was too late now for regrets and Sophia with her daredevil-esque enthusiasm demanded her to try it out.

„No, there will be an alarm when you are running low on air. Remember I’ll watch over you and as long as you’re not doing anything exhausting and breathe normally, you’ll have about 30 to 40 minutes. Now if you are ready, you can don the mask.“ Sophia said presenting Lisa a Draeger FPS 7000 full face respirator.

Lisa hesitantly accepted the black mask and inspected it more closely. After a short inspection, where she tried her best to ignore how intimidating the thought of strapping that mask over her face seemed, she gathered her courage and pulled the FPS 7000 over her head. Sophie helped her tighten the straps and did her best to not get any hair stuck in the process. When Sophia finally finished fiddling around, Lisa tried to get used to the unfamiliar feeling. To her surprise that was way easier than she thought. The mask sat comfortably on her face and her field of view was barely affected. For the first time since Sophia had talked her into trying the breathing apparatus she felt somewhat good.

„Well that’s much more comfortable than I thought it would be. So, do we connect the mask to the tank now?“ Lisa asked, as her fingers ran around the edges of her mask.

„Not so fast, first we must check if you have a proper seal. Cover the hole on the front with the palm of your hand and try to inhale. If the mask sucks against your face and no air is coming in, it means your seal is good and you are ready to go.“

Lisa did. as Sophie told her and the soft rubber of the mask sucked onto her skin, as she tried to take a breath.

„Seems good, no air came in. I think I am ready.“

Lisa said and gave a thumbs up. By now she felt indeed a little excitement about what’s to come. If Sophia made such a fuss about the whole thing, there had to be something special about it, hadn’t it?

„Ok then, it’s time to get you hooked up to that tank.“ Sophie stepped in front of Lisa and grabbed the regulator that was dangling from her SCBA. „Try to hold your head upright for a moment.“ she said and began to connect the regulator to Lisa’s mask. As soon as she had screwed the regulator into the mask's threading, she grabbed behind Lisa's back and opened the valve of the tank.

„Are you done?“ Lisa asked, her voice muffled behind the mask.

„Yes, you should be ready for your first breath of compressed air.“ Sophie responded and gave her a friendly pat on the shoulder.

Lisa closed her eyes and inhaled. A loud hissing noise filled the room as the cold, compressed air flooded her lungs. For a short moment she was frightened by the sound accompanying her breathing. Lisa gave Sophia an insecure look, but Sophia's warm-hearted smile reassured her that everything was ok. Cautiously she took a second breath. Then another. Sophia kept smiling at her, fondly remembering her first time wearing a SCBA.

„This feels awkward, I can’t say I ever actively thought about how I breathe. The sound makes me so conscious about it. And now I wouldn’t smell anything, not even the nastiest things?“ Lisa asked, intrigued by the ongoing experience.

„You physically can’t smell anything, the air you breathe is that which you carry around in the tank on your back. If you’d notice any bad smells it would mean your mask doesn’t seal properly.“ Sophie explained to her.

„That’s really convenient, maybe I have to get one of these someday to clean my cat’s litter box.“ Lisa said, pointing to the tank on her back.

Sophie grinned. „Usually I would recommend getting a mask with a filter for starters, that would surely be enough to protect you from any household smells, but from my experience once you‘ve tried the SCBA unit, you don‘t want to settle for anything less.“

„I can understand why you feel that way. This is so cool. By the way, what are these things for?“ Lisa asked while taking a closer look at the hazmat suits at the other side of the room. “Oh Lisa, you’re about to discover a whole new world.”
