Description
An abandoned home a few miles west of Proctor, Montana off of Hwy 200. For years I've driven by, but last week I finally stopped. I hiked up the muddy driveway in my fashion flats to get a better shot of this beautiful, yet forgotten, piece of history. In the early years of Montana, rich city-folk would come to the state, abusing the natural resources and the people living there, both native and white, be fore leaving. Those with a love of the land and a simpler life were allotted homesteads by greedy bureaucrats. But, especially in the mountains where glaciers had stripped the land of topsoil, every day was a fight for survival. It is amazing how much water is needed even just to sustain cattle. This abandoned home is to me a testament of who we were, and to both the fighting spirit and joy for life that still lives in the hearts of every true Montanan.

my uncle homesteaded near moorehead mt on the little powder river. had three sons at least one of whom was born there. around 1919 my mother went there with her mom to help with new baby. went by railroad and buckboard. looked on google and seems to be nothing there now except fishing camp (which I could not see on map). this pic takes me back to what might have been.
