Before there were hippies, there were beatniks. It was the fifties version of the counter-culture. Beatniks loved being non-conformist and were given to a love of poetry, especially the so-called "beat poets." They loved to gather in coffee houses, drink expresso, and listen to jazz music and folk music.

The young woman in the picture sports long hair, which was daring for the time, as shorter hair styles were more common in the fifties, while the longer hair we enjoy today did not make a resurgence till the sixties took over.

She is also wearing a T shirt with horizontal stripes, which would have seemed a bit avant-garde back '58. I can't really explain the short shorts. They would have caused a big stir wherever she went, but, nonetheless, she seems to be enjoying the attention.
