Description
My first cosplay as Drow.I chose for grey skin instead of black, as in my opinion black takes out the depth of one's face too much.

You look so cool!!
May I ask what you use for your eyebrows?
I have dark eyebrows and I was thinking of using white powder, but the powder may not be dark enough.

I use a white cream based makeup and put it on with a makeup brush. I brush against the grain so to speak, so not only the top layer is coverd. and then finish with stroking in the direction the hairs normally grow.
The cream sticks really good, much better than powder or water based makeup.
My own eyebrows are dark as well.

I love the grey skin. Why wouldn't drows have verying shades of skin pigments just as humans do. I like the intense expression as well. Very dark elven.

My thoughts exactly.
And thank you very much!

Looks great. And drow skin tones range from silvers/greys to black - just like the heavy range of human skintones. I do black, because Drow was just going to be a stepping stone to doing a Helmouri (see the works of *Siobhan68 ), and those dark elves do have the darkest of skin tones - but I still try to offset the depth by using eye shadow or baby powder to create extra highlights (opposite of creating shadows like if you've ever used a bronzer). I think it's wonderful to see more people doing the variety of tones - I have a lot of friends in the area wanting to follow my path in doing drow, and I'm trying to convince some of them to choose a tone other than the black that I use because I think the variety would be awesome.

Thank you
Ah yes, I have heard about Helmouri, though the difference between them and Drow is not all that clear to me. I find it very difficult to use highlights with makeup, I'm not very experienced with it other than covering up large surfaces, that's another reason why I chose a lighter colour. Still, eventually I want to find a shade or two darker than this, just to have it a little closer to Drow.

Besides the physical differences, there are differences in language and a few cultural differences, although as I cannot read German the cultural ones are the hardest for even me to decifer still.
As for the makeup, practice makes perfect. I went through a lot of stages of learning myself. If you don't want a pure black, you may even be able to use my favorite full coverage method - which gives you a lot of control over shading and such... apply eyeshadow in the skintone you want over a base coat (makes the color pop) using a large brush and the dabbing/tapping method. I really need to do a tutorial of that method as a lot of people go to paint first, and eyeshadow doesn't fade as fast... although as long as you set what you are using (I use a cheap hairspray) most water-based paints and cosmetics last very well.

While what you're saying about black is true, fact is, Drow are black-skinned. Grey wouldn't really be a problem, though with a shade as light as that, you're closer to a Moon Elf then a Drow.

You're right that their skin should be black, my counterpoint: in the D&D book "Drow of the Underdark"(3.5), the Drow on the front cover is grey(almost as light as this), and there are other pictures in it where their skin has a brownish tone.
But I understand what you mean, it is very light I admit, but at the time it was the darkest shade of grey I could get. Once I run out of what I currently use, I want to get my hands on a darker grey.
In the meantime, I could pose as a half Drow

Yeah, from what I've seen, there wasn't a whole lot of consistency in the art back in those days, even within the same book sometimes. Fair enough, and happy trails!

Thank you very much! ^_^
Glad to hear I am not the only one who thinks so. I tend to excuse myself for using grey, because I've never seen anyone else use it.

the better with grey tones is, you can see better the facial expressions and for me it just looks nicer than pur black

My thoughts exactly
The only downside is to try and find grey gloves and leggings. Those are practically non-existent.

Chaosvin In reply to emerald825 [2012-09-19 09:04:46 +0000 UTC]
or more thicker nylons than leggings maybe and for the gloves if there is no way to find grey ones, you can always use normal gloves and pretend she is wearing them all the time

emerald825 In reply to Chaosvin [2012-09-19 09:13:42 +0000 UTC]
I don't know about the gloves. I could pretend to wear them, but somehow I think it looks weird as I wear a glove for the swordhand over that.
I do have a grey legging(nylons won't do for me, my legs are too long, gets tight at the toes ), but then there is the collar thing, it would have to be grey too. I would rather be consistent. Perhaps I should dye it grey, if I can find the right colour of textile paint.
I will think of something eventually. First I want to focus on the clothes tehemselves (armour and tunic or something) for now the cloves, collar and legging are okay. Can work on the details later.
