Personality: Sparrow was a chestnut racing thoroughbred in the 1990s.

When he began to get older and lose his racing "spark", his owners sold him cheap to a small farm on the outskirts of New York. He was used as a work horse, which was very unsuitable for his breed.

Pulling heavy loads for the poor family, he tried his very best to keep their tiny business running, but soon they lost their shop, became ill, and couldn't care for him any longer.

In the dead of winter, when the family's last child succumbed to starvation, the father, lone survivor, took his loyal horse, mounted his back, and trotted off to the nearest town. Being as weak as they both were, they were soon sick from the cold, and lost in the woods. As a last attempt to protect his owner, Sparrow trudged day and night, carring the unconscious man on his back until he could see lights in the distance. The town was 50 yards away when he collapsed and heard growling.

Lifting his skin-and-bone body, he faced his attacker with bared teeth and a courageous look. The wolf was also skinny and very desperate.

Sparrow charged the wolf, clipping him in the back leg and emitting a howl from the mangy creature. Feeling triumphant, he continued to strike, until he felt a large weight across his back. He had thought the starving wolf was a loner, but he had only been the bait to catch Sparrow off guard. As he attempted to dislodge the other wolf, a pair came out from the woods and snarled at his heels.

Letting out a frantic whinny, Sparrow spun and kicked out, already knowing he'd lost the fight. Soon, Sparrow lay, bleeding in the snow next to his owner, whom had been ignored, presumed dead. As the wolves tore into him, he faintly saw lights approaching and heard human voices. The wolves took off running and three hunters, drawn to the loud neighing, kneeled beside his owner. Sparrow had saved his owner, at the cost of his life. He could die knowing that.

But as the humans disappeared, another light began to glow. A voice spoke gently, caressing his mind and persuading him to live again. When he agreed, and his strength was renewed, only then did he notice his stained chestnut coat. All over were the rips and tears of hungry wolves -- turned into black markings to marr his once beautiful coat. He kind of liked it.
