Might be too far fetched of a joke but I saw someone wearing a compass rose t-shirt and immediately though about that cutie mark, so!To tell you the truth a nerd like Twilight is probably ace at reading all things related to graphs but sometimes you have to give things up for the sake of a gag.

In Dragonshy, she seems to at least PRETEND she knows what she's doing when she's reading the map, and they seem to get there just fine (but then, it's hard to miss a mountain with a humongous smoke trail coming out of it).

Twilight's Cutie Mark is a six-pointed star. A compass rose is an eight-pointed star. It does exist as a Cutie Mark though. Prince Blueblood has a compass rose as his Cutie Mark.
