Might be too far fetched of a joke but I saw someone wearing a compass rose t-shirt and immediately though about that cutie mark, so!To tell you the truth a nerd like Twilight is probably ace at reading all things related to graphs but sometimes you have to give things up for the sake of a gag.

This is true, however it did take her awhile to find the best route. It only took Applejack mere seconds to find an alternate route up the mountain so I guess we can interpret that Twilight isn't the best at navigating and is simply being a little more on the humble side.
