Description Wow, we got quite a discussion about pony naming conventions going on last time! Some good points. Little disappointed most of you chose 's side, but...

Anyway, i wonder if we'll have as much discussion on my new question:

Why are unicorn horns the same colour as the pony's coat - as opposed to all being some universal "horn colour"? Is the horn itself covered in the pony's fur?

Hooves, horns, and hair and all made of keratin. Ponies have colored keratin.Β

I love Moondancer's very pointed theory without coming out and actually saying it.

But the best part?

The best part is her smug, self-satisfied smile in the last panel (note it was all upturned earlier!) which she must think herself so clever for accusing some powerful alicorn without actually accusing that her.

This is why Moondancer is the best pony ever. Okay, after Luna.Β

It's a common misconception that The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well was invented to upstage Rainbow Dash. It IS true that they wanted to teach her a lesson in humility, but humiliation was never an intentional part of that formula. They simply got the job done that Dash was doing poorly, never getting in her way or hindering her.

Oh, but that wasn't the prompt, was it... Um, horn color? Ah, their hooves are the same color too...

Well, i (and Moondancer) were just a little more perplexed at how everypony just didn't care that the dam that protected their village breaking was such a subpoint. I guess, even in ponyville, politics is politics.

Their hooves aren't, actually. Or at least, they potentially aren't. Big Mac has his hooves showing - and they aren't red.

I always thought it would have been cool if they continued the incognito hero persona of Mare Do Well. They'd pretty much be their own little secret society of do-gooders and vigilantes. I even considered making a few comics to that effect, but never got around to it... Oh well.

I did think of Big Mac, but that is perhaps simply another option; some ponies' hooves match their coats, and some don't, but horns always do.

Well... I like to think that what ever magic makes the ponies all such pastel colours leaks into every inch of them, from their coats to hair to EVERYTHING! So why can't it leak into their horns as well? Considering that most of them have uniform hoof colouring as well, it makes sense. heck, even those we see the hooves or, Shining Armour, have some strange colours, his are blue for instance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

T-Brony In reply to EmperorJewel [2013-08-19 03:36:28 +0000 UTC]

But why are their mane's different colour?

Twilight's wings and horn are purple. Are her internal organs?

The hooves i can always just "believe" they are hidden by coat fur that's grown over top of them. At least, that's my excuse. Mares are more likely than colts to grow their fur longer on their legs to cover their hooves (just as women are more likely than men to grow their hair long/colour their nails, etc).

EmperorJewel In reply to T-Brony [2013-08-19 20:47:35 +0000 UTC]

What isn't there to get about magic? Also since the horns are connected to their faces, not manes, it would be the magic dye from there. Also their manes are usually odd colours as well. I blame it all on MAGIC!

Yes.

And even on the bottom?Β

Allonsbro [2013-08-12 13:38:16 +0000 UTC]

I always thought that the bone of the horn was covered in a thin but durable membrane. This membrane helps conduct magical energy through the horn. Usually it's the same color as he pony's coat, but the heavy use of dark magic has been known to disfigure the horn and change the membrane's color. (Sombra)

Essentially the part that says disregarding the ponies they set out to protect by hanging up her cape. Celestia is an alicorn and as trollestia she would totally do that XD.

Always love Moondanncer's Monologue.

Β

Anyway, on the subject of unicorn horns it could be that they are covered in fur (ask the CMC took that route), but as we've seen them being filed that seems unlikely to me.Β  The ultimate answer is probably just that it's for artistic convenience, much like how most ponies don't have visibly distinct hooves, and as such mightΒ only be a mere simplification that doesn't reflect what the ponies would actually look like if the where "real".Β  Then again, also consider the rhinoceros, which usually has a horn that is often very close in color to it's hide.

Β

It's also a similar issue with pegasi, as strictly speaking there's no reason why the all (excluding Cadance) have wings that are the exact same color as their coat.Β  Heck, even among actualΒ birds, the plumage on the wings can often be a different color to the boddy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

T-Brony In reply to Tharag [2013-08-19 03:33:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure the real answer definitely is "artistic convenience". But that's probably also the answer to pony naming conventions. Still, i like to see what fan thoughts are on it.

True enough about pegasi wings. But wings ARE made of feathers, so having the same feather colour as fur colour is believable. Having the same bone colour as fur colour is... odd.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Ganondox In reply to T-Brony [2013-08-20 01:08:42 +0000 UTC]

Feathers, fur, and horns are all made of the same thing, keratin, it's a double standard to assume feather and fur can be the same while horns cannot. Besides, why aren't you complaining about hooves being the same color?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

T-Brony In reply to Ganondox [2013-08-21 00:21:41 +0000 UTC]

Good point about the keratin.

But to the hooves, i don't think they're necessarily the same colour. Big Mac's certainly aren't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ganondox In reply to T-Brony [2013-08-21 02:35:10 +0000 UTC]

For most ponies they have been shown as being the same color. Maybe there are a few ponies with different colored horns?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Tharag In reply to T-Brony [2013-08-19 03:51:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, in real animals horns aren't usually made of bone, but rather keratin which is the same material that things like hooves, finger nails, and even hair are made out.Β  So maybe it's not all that surprising that they'd be the same color as a pony's coat.

Β

A bit of a side note, I've often head-cannoned that the reason ponies can so readily pick up and manipulate objects with their seemingly blunt hooves, is because they are indeed made of the same material as a unicorn's horn (alicorn?)Β and so have similar magical properties.Β  The shape of a unicorn's horn is a more efficient channel so they are theΒ only ponies that can use telekinesis, but all ponies possess degree ofΒ tactile-kinesis.

Β

On a further note, perhaps the princesses are called "alicorns" because their bodies are somehowΒ ENTIRELY composed of that magical material, and hence why they are so much more powerful than regular ponies.
