Description
I thought it would be neat to show the different steps I take when I paint :]Step 1 When I have an image in my head, the first thing that I do is start drawing messy, rough lines so that I can get the general shape of it. I also used picture references to help me with posing and proportions.
Step 2 After I had the shape of it done, I started a new layer and put the old one on 40% opacity. First, I did a black outline. Then, I went into my animal anatomy book and charted out all different muscles, bones and tendons. Because Dove is extremely thin, her body has to have a lot of anatomical detail. I then went over the black with red, to help it stand out.
Step 3 (Part 1) At this stage, I hid the sketch layer completley. Using the airbrush tool, I blocked in all the values in black an white. Again, I used reference pictures at this stage.
Step 3 (Part 2) Using the paint brush, I started painting in the fur. I started with a large brush, to paint in chunks of fur. After that, I went over the entire thing with a very small (7 pixel) brush, using black and white, to make it look a tad more realistic.
Step 4 I created my fourth and final layer, and set the layer mode to overlay. After that, I painted in the colours in the mane and added some warmer tones to the greys.
