Description It's Quasimodo, played by Charles Laughton. It's from that scene where he wants to tell Esmeralda something, but can't. It's in the book, too.

Awww! Quasimodo's so gosh darned lovable. Charles Laughton played him wonderfully. That scene made me sad, though, both in the book and the film.

This is really good! I love the texture and the details in his clothing. The folds look really natural. Also, that's usually how my hair looks in the morning.

The scene made me sad, too, but it was a very effective scene. Thank you very much for the comment! And one of the reasons why I chose this screenshot is because of that hair, hahaha.

oh this is really right on - based on the fact that screens are not very good to draw on in terms of hue, sharpness and depth it is a real achievement

Thank you for sharing!

Awww... That's a great drawing!

I loved the Laughton version. I just kept thinking in my head throuhgout this film (AND the book) "Oh, poor bugger..." Never gets a break does he?

This is goin' into my faves...

Thank you!
Yeah, me too... But what can you do - if you're a cool character in a Victor Hugo book, you're pretty much doomed .

I love that version. He really did Quasi justice (along with Lon Chaney).

I like that version . And I love the Lon Chaney one. I can't say one was better than another though, both of them are good for different reasons.

No doubt. I think they're both equally great. Though as much as I think Chaney is made of liquid awesome, I have a fondness for the Laughton version. Mostly because it was the first HoND film I ever saw. Even before the Disney one.

By the way, even though I think they were both great, no movie has yet been close to completely satisfactory for me. I don't know, it's hard to make a movie out of that really long novel and make it very accurate.

Crystal-Gargoyle In reply to Emma888 [2009-09-06 21:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Thats true. The Anthony Quinn version came pretty close to the book, but the bad acting, costumes and makeup really were painful.

Lol, that's what I was thinking while watching it . I have an ideal adaption in my head, but i don't think it'll ever be made, haha. It's gritty, dark and realistic, with lots of dirt and pain (just like the novel), and very emotionally draining. Yeah, that's how 'I' would make it. What would your ideal adaption of NDdP be like?

Crystal-Gargoyle In reply to Emma888 [2009-09-07 18:16:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... very atmospheric and a little stylized. Quasimodo would be sufficiantly grotesque, but still have that quality that makes you root for him. Esmeralda would be a teenager, like she was in the book, not a little sex kitten (as much as I love Salma Hayek).

Emma888 In reply to Crystal-Gargoyle [2009-09-08 21:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, Salma was such a sexy Esmeralda. Not like she was supposed to be at all, haha . I thought the one in Lon Chaney version was a very good Esmeralda, she's my favorite.

You should check out hugosnotredame's channel on youtube. The guy has almost every version of HoND! Wish youtube existed when I was in the eigth grade. Probably would have saved me countless of hours scouring for them on the internet.

Aparently there was a TV version that came out in the seventies that does the characters great justice. Esmeralda is an innocent teenager, Quasimodo is compelling, and Jehan is just freakin' hillarious.

Jehan: oh pox, all this bloodshed is making my loins burn...

Lmao! I remember that last movie. I have been on Youtube, watching Hugosnotredame's channel. Liked the 1977 version, and it does have a great Esmeralda and a great Jehan. Gringoire is creepy looking, though.

Crystal-Gargoyle In reply to Emma888 [2009-09-09 21:23:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Poor Gringoire definitely looks like he has a vitamin defficiancy in the '77 version. But I like how Quasimodo has plenty of dialogue. I know his character is a man of few words (mostly due to hearing loss), but I always love to hear what he has to say.

Emma888 In reply to Crystal-Gargoyle [2009-09-10 15:45:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I thought he was a good actor and all (Warren Clarke, I think?), but his voice bugged the heck out of me.
And about Gringoire having vitamin deficiency... I think it's realistic to assume, he was starving a lot of the time.

Crystal-Gargoyle In reply to Emma888 [2009-09-11 02:17:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, his voice was a little off, but I was happy to see he that they gave him plenty of dialogue. I also like his teeth. Nice and snaggly. I also enjoyed the '97 version. Mostly because Esmeralda finally treats Quasi with genuine friendship.

Hahhahaha! Nice and snaggly, lol. I liked his teeth too .
Have you seen the 1982 one? He kind of gets a friendship with Esmeralda in that one (nothing compared to 1997 I guess, but she kisses him once, haha).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crystal-Gargoyle In reply to Emma888 [2009-09-11 16:53:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the '82 version is pretty good. Though I think Anthony Hopkins would have done better as Frollo rather then Quasimodo. Also, the ending was very anticlimactic. But even so, the makeup and scenery was good. I had no idea Paris was so muddy.

Oh Quasi! I love this film, particularly the bit when Esmerelda is talking about animals in the woods in the cathedral and Frollo's...well, he's not listening.

By the way, do you pronounce it Qwah-Sea or Qwoh-zee?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emma888 In reply to SilasYnYTanc [2009-08-30 17:46:04 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha!! I remember that scene, too. Such a strange thing to have in such an old movie, don't you think?
As for how it's pronounced, don't you remember the Disney movie?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilasYnYTanc In reply to Emma888 [2009-08-30 17:58:10 +0000 UTC]

I do! But I say Quah-see with an Ah sound and all my friends say Quoh-zee with an Owh sound. Mind you, I pronounce all my A's funny, but in this instance I believe I say it the same way as Esmerelda does

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emma888 In reply to SilasYnYTanc [2009-08-30 18:04:56 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard anyone say it with an Owh sound!

SilasYnYTanc In reply to Emma888 [2009-08-30 18:13:14 +0000 UTC]

Really?? It took me a while to figure out how to type it as you say it. It's like the A in WAS. But yes, all my friends say it that way. I am odd to them because of it

Emma888 In reply to SilasYnYTanc [2009-08-31 05:05:52 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.... Now that I think about it, judge Claude Frollo also said as Qwoh-zee-modo a couple of times, didn't he?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilasYnYTanc In reply to Emma888 [2009-08-31 15:52:36 +0000 UTC]

He did! Like that dramatic head-turning "QWOH-ZEE MODO!" as Quasi ascends Notre Dame with Esmerelda

I read one about Frollo persuading Esmeralda to leave the town with him (after the Cathedral fight scene in the book). Later he keeps her in a shed and rapes her over and over again. I had a nightmare about that later.
