Description On Monday I found a run-over 4GB flash drive at school. I pocketed it and it turned out still works, despite the case having been mutilated spectacularly.
Life presented me with the perfect opportunity for a steampunk flash drive case mod, and I snatched it up.

Here is the result of several hours of work with copper sheet, copper wire, a brass beanie, wood caps on the ends, leather thong tie, and a little fake gear bead. The metal is all soldered together and the green plastic stone lights up when the drive is in use.

If anyone knows where one can buy inexpensive (preferably uncased) flash drives, please let me know! I might make some to sell.

Hi,
Its me again. I love this! So did you find any USB drives to make more of these? I hope so. Very very cool!

Nope not yet... I haven't really looked because, uh, I don't know why actually.
But I need to.

Man, this is awesome! You
might check at ebay. Sometimes that have amazing sales on them. I usually get the 2, 4, or 8 gb . Also, believe it or not, sometimes Amazon.com has unbelievably amazing prices on them also. Only problem with them is that if you don't have an order of $25.00 you have to pay for shipping.

AMAZON AND EBAY
Why the hell didn't I think of that?
My mom even has Amazon Prime so she gets free 2 day shipping on most items.

well you know, any one can do it the easy way right? Sometimes the obvious is overlooked. I do that a lot. Truthfully my focus is apparently different. If you keep a watch at ebay, you can get some really good deals. I got a 16gb usb drive with a 2 gb for free as well, for $14.00 The little 2gb and 4gb are sometimes next to nothing, price wise.
I love Steampunk. It is so, so amazing.

Yeah, I just got 100 yards of black lace trim off Ebay for $18. That's under $.06 a yard! I made a skirt using trim as cloth

Great design.

As to where to pick up USB cards that are good for modding I would point you to Wal-Mart.

The PNY mini attached 4 gig USB card costs 10 bucks, and I love working with them.

You can squeeze them, and find where the metal is, and just saw off the back part. After that saw down the length, and you are ready for action. The actual device is rather small, and nicely contained. Its only downside is that it is not one of the 'light up' kind.

Good luck with you're future projects, and I look forward to viewing them.

Kasdren In reply to Emoeba [2012-02-02 18:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Ya there are some flash drives out there that just refuse to stop working. I swear I put this one drive (with no cap) through the washer 3 or 4 times. Still works.

Emoeba In reply to Kasdren [2012-02-02 19:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Nice! My friend had one that went through the wash like once a week, fell in a swimming pool, and I think got dropped out of a moving car or something. It worked for years despite the abuse. Eventually it died peacefully, it just wouldn't mount anymore.

So far the worst any of mine has gotten is just life on a key ring xD

Kasdren In reply to Emoeba [2012-02-02 21:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Lol.
These sticks are getting pretty small nowadays. Its crazy, a 4 gb stick use to be expensive. Now the same size memory in a smaller stick is expensive. Heck see the micro SD card that is 16gb? Those are the kind phones use!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emoeba In reply to Kasdren [2012-02-02 21:44:57 +0000 UTC]

I have a 16GB micro SD card (with an adapter) in my Canon s95
It's my second biggest card, I need the space for shooting RAW.

Also got a 32GB SD (class 10 iirc) card for my Nikon D3100, but that was kinda expensive.

Wonder what is next in memory storage in the tech world?
Memory sticks so small that you could absorb them?
Making your whole person into a memory drive? Lol

Now that I think of it they have something like this. Dogs have the id chip trackers. Heard some stories of people with similar type things to contain credit card info and medical history.

Emoeba In reply to Kasdren [2012-02-03 04:26:25 +0000 UTC]

Sounds likely.

My friend with the flash drive told me what really happened to it:
Zillion times through the wash, fell in a pool, thrown out a window, run over by a car. And when it stopped working he reformatted it and it worked again xD

Agent-West In reply to Emoeba [2012-02-02 02:38:58 +0000 UTC]

how'd you affix it in there? hot glue?

it's like a battle tank of flashdrives now! And is handy if you need something to throw at someone

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emoeba In reply to Agent-West [2012-02-02 02:47:08 +0000 UTC]

I just padded it with an electrically insulating foam sheet (which happens to be white children's craft foam ) to keep it from touching the copper and potentially shorting out, taped it into a bundle, shoved it inside (it was very snug), and glued on the little wooden end cap to hold it in place.

The plug is really stable too, I was afraid there would be some play but it's at least as solid as commercial drives.

Agent-West In reply to Emoeba [2012-02-02 02:48:48 +0000 UTC]

Is it for sale?

Also, have you ever made a (steampunk) spiked collar?

Emoeba In reply to Agent-West [2012-02-02 04:22:33 +0000 UTC]

Not for sale. If I find a way to get really cheap drives (or guts) I might make similar ones to sell, but this one is miiiine

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agent-West In reply to Emoeba [2012-02-02 04:26:26 +0000 UTC]

Look at pawn shops and such, or walmart. They are about $10 at wm, add $10-20 for labor/materials, let customer pay shipping...

Also be cool to have something like that chrome plated (maybe not steampunk style, but more futuristic stuff though).
