EXACTLY. I couldn't love these two much more if I tried, I've been leaning towards Kolin since seeing Bo's profile on Nick.com, (being curious about the line, "& always a lady under his arm" which with the exception of Korra, remains to be seen, & this being the finale Saturday, I doubt their gonna tag this in, UNLESS they get Makorra outta the way the first few eps into season 2, & proceed to make Korra jealous with one of Bolin's fangirls from the tournament days.
I already came up with an AU to them, in which the trio meet up as kids, either Korra's parents having business in Republic City, or perhaps to give a more realistic feel (the chances being crazily out of nowhere), Korra also being an orphan, her parents being taken at an early age, mostly to keep Korra from knowing a whole lot (if any) about her bending/Avatar status. She proceeds to hide from authorities once she begins to realize that she is indeed the Avatar, proabably runs into one or both the brothers, but preferrably Bo, is being messed with by local thugs (maybe trying to get away from the triple threats?), or similar events, the two/threesome hit it off immediately, Bolin becoming her bestie almost instantly, & they basically stick together until Chief Lin &/or Tenzin catches Korra using two/three elements in the same event (her doing this out of habit). The girl reluctantly moves in with Tenzin, but makes sure the brothers can move in as well, giving them full credit for keeping her safe as a child after her parents were gone.
Then as for Pro-bending, Bo & Mako's parents could have easily been pro-bending stars themselves, causing a VERY excited Bolin to instantly want to join in on the fray with his bro & crush, Korra's more than ready to join in with him, BUT needs convincing cuz of Tenzin's feelings toward the sport, & wanting her to concentrate on her training. It doesn't take Bo much to get her convinced though, & the same stuff happens there as in the canon, proceeding to allow the Asami meet-up to still be needed, (I highly doubt any of the trio would DARE ask Tenzin for help in the championship money, not after he very relunctantly lets them play, not to mention letting the bros move in with Korra, after all.

Lol, I wish! ^-^ Another version of this same AU would have her simply join in on the brothers' origin story, (them right after the parents were mugged) all three becoming the pro-bending team as in the canon, & where Korra uses firebending during a match out of habit & Tenzin overhears? Basically the same scene (literally, LOL XD), & only when Korra climbs up to go back to the arena & Tenzin's there to greet her, she's simply in shock that it was THIS easy to meet him without having too much trouble, you can imagine Tenzin's reaction (though HARDLY having any reaction at ALL to her being in the tournament due to, for 8 years, believing there to currently be no Avatar or her missing (latter being true XD), & insists she moves in with him & begin her training.
She surprises him by insisting herself that the boys have trained her everything they both know (Mako currently working with her on using lightening), showing a display of this later on (when more appropriate), & then they only move on to her airbending training.
However, she remains with Mako & Bolin for the most part, including not moving into Air Temple Island, yet. She doesn't go anywhere without at least one of them, & moving to a new place requires both before she gives her consent. ^_^

Now, ya'know how Mako just freaked over Tarrlok capturing Korra in WEM, & it seemed out of place despite the obvious budding "romance"? Well, in my version? LOL, Bo totally freaks out in his place (the two boys essentially swapping roles in this ep almost entirely), this even triggering his metalbending at certain points (I like to imagine it's during the point of them finding the wall that leads to the underground, 'bout the middle part of the episode I think), & note that Beifong is seeing this entire little display. She's relunctant with her decision yes, but she does eventually decide to train him as a future police officer. The metalbending training being in full swing by book 2's first ep, making Bo even *gasp* USEFUL in these eps, not just comic relief.
& naturally, Mako is with Asami this whole time, never betrays her or anything. For that second ep, Bolin & Mako do separate a little bit- he stays with Korra (& yup, *definitely* dating by this time), while Mako mostly stays in Republic in the same role he is in canon, whilist helping Asami with her business troubles. Bolin still helps her charm their way into her business partner. (I love that scene too much, can't change it <3)
& all those Makorra scenes in book 2 so far? All Borra instead! <3
& Eska? Pfft, yeah he only attempts befriending them both, after Korra's little surprise of meeting her only family members after so long of holding that orphan status, but Bo doesn't even bother beyond that. The boy's far too loyal to even look.
