Description
Seriously, devianTARTS, stop whining about no one commenting when they fave. If you make commenting a prerequisite, people will either post one-word "COOL", "KAWAII", etc or just not fave it at all. And since faves affect its popularlity and therefore its exposure, that really hurts your audience. (Plus one-word comments are really annoying. I don't know how you guys feel - I personally can easily tolerate the ones I already get, no problem. However, I would NEVER willingly invite any more of them.)So, listen to my Voice of Reason, and say you would LIKE a comment - and specify what you want in it, like a critique, or telling what they liked, so you get less one-worders - but that one is not required to fave it.
And those of you that want a feature forcing comments - you are idiots. Then ALL you get is non-favers and one-worders. Both of which will piss you off, but with that feature you can't let any SANE people just ignore your demands and fave without leaving you a KAWAII!!!11!1oneonee11!!
...so there.
New sister stamp for those on the other side:

I agree totally with this stamp. One reason I do stuff like this is that I am short on time and don't have time to write comments on everything. Another reason is that I like a picture but don't have time to look at it with depth. So I fave it and come back later.

I personally don't care if people "fave and run," and I don't particularly care for one-word comments (though I'm guilty of it myself at times, but that's usually on photos of kittens, but I digress). I *like* to get comments, don't get me wrong, but I don't get all bent out of shape because I don't get them. I wonder about people sometimes.

"I do not not Fav & Run, I merely collect without comment."
That's... Completely synonymous. That's like saying "I don't kill people, I merely hit them until they stop moving."
Now, I don't support the idea of forcing a comment first before a fave, but it's very annoying when all you get are faves... It hurts our self esteem. Here, this journal will explain: [link]

Definitely agree...
Many years ago, I watched an artist that was a big proponent of the "comment if you fave" movement. I would try to give her productive feedback whenever I faved something (I hate leaving one-word comments), but there was a point where my inbox got backed up and I went on a faving spree whilst cleaning it out -- without leaving comments, because I'm not made of time... and (again) because I hate leaving people one-word comments. ZOMG.
And then she came to my page and thanked me for my favorites... but then she informed me that she had this "rule," and that I'd forgotten to comment on any of the things I'd faved.
...
Out of the thousands of favorites I've given (I've been here a while), and the many generic "thanks for the fave" comments I have received... I have NEVER. EVER. Had anyone else come to my page and say "...thanks for the fave, BUT--"
What the hell?
So, I removed my favorites and I un-watched her ungrateful ass. :-devwatch:
The morale of this story is, favorites are nice and comments are awesome (especially when the commentator has something to say)... but demanding comments whenever someone faves your work makes you look like an asshole.
Nice stamp.

Practically? Perhaps. The deviantART engine tracking comments and favourites does not notice and does not care.
But socially? In the way you interact with other users and they interact with you? They are very different.
"Fav and run" has negative connotations, and is used in the same way as 'hit and run' - people who use that phrase are generally accusing you of having the audacity to add something to your favourites without commenting a long piece on why they are awesome!
"Collect with comment" means 'I am adding this to my favourites because I like it, and I'm not going to leave comments that don't mean anything just because you demand them'. Some people wanted to make comments required. To them I say NAY (the description already says why). Though they managed to get the "don't forget to comment!" line which is only marginally better.

I agree in both stamp and what you're writing. I also remebered the time where I was afraid of faving because of all those comment before you fav-stamps that was all over the place. I didn't fav, because I didn't have a clue what to say.
Now I've realized how wonderful comments is, and (more important for my selfish me) that I enjoy the art way more and see a lot more details if I sit down and tries to tell the artist what I like about the piece of art instead of just telling them that I liked it (which also is what you do when you fave, I guess). I've ended up commenting about twice as much as faving after finding out ^^
... It would have been easier to say 'I agree', but you've got the point xD Great stamp.
This comment count for both this and the sister-stamp, by the way :3 Think you very much for making these stamps.

We need more sane minds like yours! If this mentality was more common, dA would be all the better for it.
Incidentally, not begging that I "comment before faving" has now earned you an additional comment.

In the end deviantART caved, unfortunately. They at least didn't make it a requirement - but when you add something to your favourites, you'll notice the artist's icon gets a "don't forget to comment!" remark.
Which I hate, because it's all automatic which means it appears above mine too and even though I love comments - I really do - I don't want to make demands on people's time by begging for them. (Shut up, dA UI.)
Also, thanks, on both counts.

I think it would be better if we could write our own remarks. That way, I could write "Thank you for +faving" or something like that. A little gratitude goes a long way, sometimes.

If you make commenting a prerequisite, people will either post one-word "COOL", "KAWAII", etc or just not fave it at all. <- This is me. The mere sight of in the ACs will usually make me just run without faving or commenting. No matter how good the work in question is.
Even when I'd intended to do both before I saw THAT DAMNED ICON.

Ooooh, sting! What a pity that merely informing someone of this would meet their demands, and they'd not know if you didn't....?
Once I faved something (too awesome not too) and said "you demanded a comment, so you get one"... and the (quite-long)comment consisted entirely of why you shouldn't demand comments.
...they never replied.

Vanshira In reply to Emotikonz [2010-11-26 02:33:46 +0000 UTC]
...Well, if they ever did get the option to force a comment before faving, I would inevitably leave a comment along the lines of "Here's your f***ing comment. I'm not going to fave, because obviously the comment is all you wanted; are you happy yet?"
Because really, were they expecting an endless outpouring of constructive praise and criticism with that tactic?
...I should do that now...

We have a Critique for subscribers. Artists should already know Deviantart is not by any means the best place to 'get noticed'. 3/4s of what appears on the front page is laughable in the eyes of the professional looking to hire a potential artist. I can't tell you how many people in my own class have been laughed at and thrown out for having fan art in their portfolios, let alone relying on Deviantart community to 'register' their 'art on the chart'.
I'm all for looking for critiques and positive reviews or you know, words of encouragement or tips on how to get better, but really, that's why we have tutorials, books, and workshops. If you're really intent on getting your work improved, you need to go out, and do that improvement yourself, and find yourself a credible art community that actually -takes- your artwork PAST the fanart seriously.
I approve of this stamp. This is a community of people who love art. Collecting, is what we do.
