Description
Seriously, devianTARTS, stop whining about no one commenting when they fave. If you make commenting a prerequisite, people will either post one-word "COOL", "KAWAII", etc or just not fave it at all. And since faves affect its popularlity and therefore its exposure, that really hurts your audience. (Plus one-word comments are really annoying. I don't know how you guys feel - I personally can easily tolerate the ones I already get, no problem. However, I would NEVER willingly invite any more of them.)So, listen to my Voice of Reason, and say you would LIKE a comment - and specify what you want in it, like a critique, or telling what they liked, so you get less one-worders - but that one is not required to fave it.
And those of you that want a feature forcing comments - you are idiots. Then ALL you get is non-favers and one-worders. Both of which will piss you off, but with that feature you can't let any SANE people just ignore your demands and fave without leaving you a KAWAII!!!11!1oneonee11!!
...so there.
New sister stamp for those on the other side:

It amuses me so much that people come here expecting to get the same results in the real world. Deviantart is like high school. You're still handed everything, or you're the kid who has to earn his popularity from being a geek. But nothing you do social wise -matters- after you get out of that school and into the real world. You have to start with a clean slate, and really make a mark in the world. That's where people have the adjustment problem. I mean really, I have to admit, many things on the front page are gorgeous, eye candy, and admiring.
But when you go to a bookstore, and see art that is way -under- the skills of the people on this site, you learn quickly that it isn't always about your skill or how popular amongst the communities you are. Its how you show off to a potential client. Commissions is a great way to earn money on here. This is true. Great way to make art buddies for life, and find opportunities. But if you're here looking for a means to hit the high league, you need to get yourself off this site and into a college. Comments from people here, honestly mean NOTHING. They're friendly polite gestures from the community, people who have come to say "I love this." Why do they love it? It's probably fan art. Anime. It's probably the style they're yearning to learn themselves. It may even be a concept they think is original. But are they going to get you a salary for the year and promote you to high status? Absolutely not. I've seen people with shitty work with tons of comments. Their art is by no means improved. I've seen fantastic art with little comments. But they are taking care of themselves and improving without the use of comments! What an amazing and sinning concept this must be to people.
Really. It amuses me -.-.

Wait. People actually expect they'll get hired by posting stuff here? I thought this was a site for, you know, fun.
This is news to me, though now that I think about it, some kids act like they're about to become the next big thing.

DA is very popular for getting people popular in their craft. It's no surprise, from a basic marketing standpoint, however. Anything more then that and you're working with something that could undermine your profession entirely.

This is true.
I suppose people are hoping that the (realitvely) new Portfolio feature is supposed to give deviantARTists more standing, though many great artists without premium can't use it and many crapolas can (and probably do, though most likely out of experimentation than anything else).
Even with this feature, the best portfolios I would say are the ones that are self-created to show a little more independence - as well as the oppurtunity to show more creativity - than just a template. That said, for those who are still testing the waters I suppose it can help them get into the 'groove', as it were, for how they work...
Popularity on deviantART is nothing more than an ego-boost, however people wanting comments - specifically what they liked about it (hopefullly beyond NARUTO IS KAWAII!!!, and more constructive) are most likely hoping for advice on how to improve.
Personally I think it is unrealistic that everyone be expected to provide this, even if they were willing, since most people tend to +fav art of higher quality to their own (lower quality and all they can see is the flaws...) and therefore will probably have little valuable information to add until the flaws stick right out in their face..!
You're going quite deeply into an area of deviantART community I merely brushed over. This is quite interesting. I am reading your comments fully with interest although I have little I can add or debate about them.

It's alright. XD. We collect without comment, I don't expect you to comment with comment.
The portfolio feature, it is relatively new, and at the same time, it's also relatively hidden. I honestly had absolutely no clue DA had a portfolio feature until I stumbled across an artist who had a Journal CSS linking to their own portfolio. I am sure many professionals, while they may not despise Deviantart, do avoid it, so I can only imagine what a URL linking to a Deviantart Portfolio, especially to those who have no clue what it is, is going to assume.
There are many problems with Deviantart's systems. The comments, the front page, the favorite system, the 'Daily Deviations'. It is a friendly community for artists by artists, but it is by no means 'to' artists in terms of professional application. It's ridiculous how seriously people take something as simple as pageviews in terms of how 'good' they are at art.
But besides the lack of intelligence in the community...XD Do you by any chance take requests for animated icons? I was flipping through your gallery, trying to see if you took commissions or not. I like your concept of the little emoticon profile pages for users, it's very dynamic. I was wondering if you would be up to pulling one off for me, whether by request or commission. :3

You really didn't notice the portfolio..? One the feature was released, everyone (probably non-subbers too) got *coughADVERTISEMENTcough* 'news' in their inbox (might'a been a hot topic)! Given how blatant it was, I thought it would be prety hard to miss! deviantART is not exactly subtle with their adve- I mean, erm, news. (Because as subbers, we don't have ads *coughLIEcough* so they couldn't be ads, could they...?)
Pageviews are DEFINATELY not sign of good art. ~mrDExArts has only a few views but magnificent pieces, and many of the more 'popular' users merely get views from forum-trawling (or forum trolling!) or because their art is actually so BAD people go to their page to see more..!
If by animated icons, you mean avatars, not any more, no. Many people asked me to do their *coughSPARKLEDIGDRAGONHYBRIDSANDCANONSIBLINGScough* 'original characters' until my soul was gradually reduced to a tiny puff of cynicism. However (don't tell the Sparkledogs this) people can tempt me with commissioning or if their idea is actually original and interesting - I mostly say no to discourage freeloaders.
Stamps and Emoticon Character Panels are free for all users, however, because no one requests them that much already. (As opposed to like ONE EVERY TWO DAYS for avatars )

It may have been one of the days my subscription wasn't activated. I know I've gone a few times last year without a sub for a bit before I give it up. But then again, you gotta think about that as well: Deviantart seems to spam Subscribers with their "elite" advertisements, leaving 3/4s of the community out to begin with if this was the case.
There have honestly been a lot of news advertisements and little jump ups that I haven't seen unless I go looking for them myself. So you can tell if one user is missing them, imagine how many others are.
I wasn't looking for anything spectacular with the avatars, something simply like you have with yours, but perhaps with a Raichu or my character (which trust me, I've spent 7 years refining her species, I just got started on the planet. Six years of biology class will do that to you. It amazes me how many people pass off species just because of the dumb shit they add. XD) But if I had to compare her to anything, it'd probably be a trimmed Norwegian Forest Cat. I really need to get around to getting a ref. Maybe I could propose a commission with you, of either or. :3 But I hear you when you talk about freeloaders. Definitely don't need them coming around XD.

My avatar looks a lot simpler than it really is It has about 30 layers, although only about 20 are visable (the others are differnt versions of eyes, etc) - though, granted, it is only 8 frames long...
...I do have an alein character too actually, and made her my avatar for my main account: . Can't really compare her to anything real-life (especially since she has been modified since that avatar) but she has deerlike hooves and headshape...
Anyway see if you can get a ref for your character up and I'll have a look. Also think of some good animations - the simplier the better, to stay under the limit, especially if your character has a lot of detail parts. You could ask for a sprite attempt but if you want quality you should go for an emotified version. If you entice me enough I just might do it...!

Totally agree with you 100%! It's nice to know what kind of comments the artist wants. A lot of the time I don't comment because people tend to be assholes, I just don't want to say, "Cool," and I don't know what they want.

Indeed.
Unfortunately even not commenting can cause issues if the artist in question has waaaay too much time on their hands, because people have lamented in the past that such artists may come to their page to leave a derogatory comment..!
