Description
One of the longest serving vessels in the Union alongside the Dart class the Ferrum as a battleship class has served the Union since before its inception, back during the days of the Civil War against Capitol where the class first iteration was designed and built. While that first iteration was only a handful of ships the Ferrum would be redesigned and improved after the Union was founded, and has served the Union as its main battleship ever since. Massive in size, armed to the teeth with a plethora of weapons and heavily defended enough to take enormous punishment the Ferrum is regularly seen in Union battlefleets either acting as the flagship for smaller more moderate formations or in entire squadrons during truly huge fleet engagements. Fully capable of engaging the enemy both at range with its spinal weapon, QAC cannons and missiles and up close with its plasma cannons, Spearhead drones and gravitic accelerators the Ferrum can lay down ferocious firepower capable of carving up enemy battleships or annihilating whole formations of smaller ships. While not particularly fast the Ferrum itself can survive heavy damage, mitigating enemy fire for a long while as it throws up gigantic flak walls and defends with its own attack craft complement. The sight of Ferrums paving the way in combat and defending Union worlds is an inspiring sight to behold and many Captains in the Navy Core aspire to one day command one of these behemoths. It was the Ferrum that tried to anchor the line during the Draken war, using its sheer firepower and survivability to try hold the Draken back, these ships took immense losses but their kill to loss ratio was higher than any other Union vessel during that conflict. Upgraded to the latest systems in the Horizon fleet program the Ferrum has seen a total redesign into a four pronged layout, a rather striking appearance from its previous arrowhead configurations. Still its reputation precedes it and the Ferrum continues to act as the linebreaker and anchor for the entire Navy Core.
