Description
Originating as a concept built around a single ship being able to support and act as a mobile outpost for an entire fleet, the idea originated back during the Phantom war, but was not acted on until the Nomad Incident. Given the sheer mobility of the Violar the Union fleets struggled to be mobile enough strategically to effectively engage them, as such the first Lancer class was built, a large investment of resources for the early Union at the time. Ten vessels were constructed at the outset, each one slowly rolling off their specially created and monumental spacedock orbiting Jupiter. Each Lancer packs within it enough firepower to stand toe to toe with an entire enemy fleet, fighting off whole squadrons of enemy capital ships single handedly. Not only this but its defences are more than capable of handling heavy return fire, and redundancy has been key to keeping lancers in the fight long term. Able to carry massive amounts of attack craft into the fray as well the Lancer doubles as a super carrier, laying down huge barrages of fire and waves of craft to support a large Union fleet. Most importantly however the Lancer carries within it large foundries and factories, capable of converting resources into new parts, ammunition and more to supply surrounding fleets with whatever they need. This has allowed the Lancer to act in concert with other support vessels to form a strong mobile staging area in enemy territory, one that can absolutely defend itself in case of attack. Lancers while facilitating greater mobility in the Nomad Incident did not perform well, and for a time especially in the Second Golden Age the class was considered for mothball or even retirement from service completely. It wouldn't be until the Draken war where the Lancer would show its true capabilities in fighting off entire swarms of Draken craft single handily and anchoring the battle line of the galaxies defenders. The Lancer won much renown, with its class receiving at its height hundreds of vessels before the conflicts end, with sadly the majority of them never returning home. Cemented into the Navy Core the Lancer can now be found rarely within Union territory, acting as mobile basing or within shipyards ready to respond to the call of battle, the new Horizon fleet models bringing the very latest in technology to the Dreadnoughts capability.
