Of course now it's doing the Madoka Magica, thing and taking a nose dive into depressing territory.

It is like Maho Shoujo in the fact that it is making Magical Girls more action packed, and being also super cute and cuddly!
But I don't find either of them to be depressing. Then again this is coming from a guy who did not shed a tear during stuff like Bambi's Mother's Death or anything in Titanic.
SO WHAT IF YANG GOT HER ARM CUT OFF?! There was no blood and guts when it happened, just glittery yellow stuff! It's not like something you'd see out of GANTZ, or Elfen Lied, or Another, or Battle Royal High School, or Fullmetal Alchemist, or Fist Of The North Star, or Genocyber, or Kill La Kill or any other show like that!
And I mean like Finn in Adventure Time also got his arm torn off in an episode (permanently), and that wasn't so bad, and Adventure Time was still a kids show, BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
And Luke Skywalker in Star Wars also got his arm torn off in an episode (permanently), and that wasn't so bad, and Star Wars was still a kids movie, BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
SO WHAT IF PENNY DIED? It wasn't a bloody and gorey death, so I'd say it's okay.
I mean loads of kids shows have characters getting killed off.
Like in Megaman Zero 2, Megaman X himself, the long-time protagonist of the series, gets killed permanently! Elpizo, the resistance leader, killed him through stabbing him, with Zero watching it happen in front of him, with him being unable to do anything about it to help his old colleague. And Megaman Zero was still for kids BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
And in Adventure Time, we see stuff like the Dimensional Wish-Granting Wizard, Prismo, get killed harshly by The Lich. Then after his death, the Citadel Guardians attempted to avenge Prismo, but were all slaughtered by The Lich's Plague attack. Then the Lich drank their blood (which was pink blood, not red blood), and absorbed power from it, causing him to grotesquely regenerate his wounds completely. And yet Adventure Time was still for kids despite all that death!
And in Digimon we had death scenes like Kouichi (who is human) being brutally murdered by the Demonic Digimon, Lucemon. And Wizardmon dying horribly during an attempt to save Kairi and Gatomon. And Yukio's untimely demise (Yukio was also human). And Digimon was still for kids, BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
And in Big Hero 6, at the very early parts of the movie, you see Hiro's own brother die in a fire! Plus, throughout most of it, you see poor Hiro in great despair over the fact that he couldn't save his brother, even with his own advanced technology. And yet Big Hero 6 was for kids BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
And in Freedom Planet, during the very opening cutscene, you see The King get his Head Chopped Off by the evil Lord Brevon, with his own son watching his father get killed in front of him. And no, the King doesn't suddenly come back to life or anything.

And yet Freedom Planet was still a kid's video game BECAUSE NO BLOOD!
I could name DOZENS and DOZENS of examples like it too, all in Kids shows and Movies and Games. Just to strengthen my point.
I would only say that it is what say it is, if it were instead a Massive Slaughterfest Massacre of Magical Girls with them all dying in Giant Bloody Gore-Splattered ways, such as having their brains splattered all over a wall, or getting their spinal columns torn out, or having their intestines pulled out of their mouths, and other deaths like that.

And Like they do in all the Adult Swim shows I've watched.
And like they do in truly not-for-kids anime shows like GANTZ, or Elfen Lied, or Another, or Battle Royal High School, or Fullmetal Alchemist, or Fist Of The North Star, or Genocyber, or Kill La Kill.
But seriously I think it is all a huge exaggeration. I like the series, but it's not really like that.
Also, I want you to see this below. For the first ever Magical Girl show (Sailor Moon), and other shows like that. Look at these things.

Tell that to Sailor Moon, Megaman X/Megaman Zero, Adventure Time, Digimon, Big Hero 6, or Freedom Planet, and all those other kids shows I just mentioned!

Not to mention, you see Steven's colleague, Garnet, being brought to tears over the fact that her own friends who were killed, Post-Mortem, were used to create that reanimated abomination. And it's one of the few moments where Steven himself is genuinely terrified (normally the dangerous things he encounters don't scare him, except here)! And just look at the form it first takes after breaking out of that capsule, of a bunch of tortured-looking ghostly humanlike shapes all screaming in pain! What do you have to say about that?!
